San Franciso reparations

We have a Supreme Court of right wing jurists whose decisions will affect adversely the voting rights of African Americans, the ability of state legislatures to reign in the violence from guns that affects disapportionately African Americans, and the use of affirmative actions in college admissions and no doubt other contexts. Meanwhile, we have a bunch of looney tunes obsessed about the past.

Why are we even talking about this? I'm in favor of helping right the wrongs, but this proposal, as written, is implausible, impractical, and imposes its own set of injustices.

All this whataboutism for other groups of people. Newsflash! Slaves didn't volunteer for the all expense paid one way trip across the Atlantic. If you feel so strongly about other groups, then feel free to file a petition for reparations on their behalf. Nothing is stopping you from doing that.

NObody should be getting any reparations for any injustices done to their ancestors from other people's ancestors. Reparations are paid to those still alive for the wrongs done to them to ruin their lives. What coulda woulda is hard to quantify. There is literally zero proof that every single black family would have been super affluent had there not been Slavery and Jim Crow. If this were true, then ALL the whites would have been rich now, but tons of them are dirt poor. It's like a wrongful death lawsuit where underwriters are trying to quantify how much someone's life is worth and extrapolating how much they would have earned had they stayed alive. Doing this exercise for a large group of unrelated people is simply moot.

And why should people who weren't the ones to commit the injustices have to pay for the injustices committed by others?

I am with you on this, but if there is a severe injustice committed against a certain group of people there is a case for reparations for the survivors of that injustice who are alive and directly experienced it, had been put through pain, lost their health, etc. We paid reparations to Japanese Americans who were sent to the internment camps. Germany paid reparations to the Holocaust survivors who were imprisoned in its death camps. Was it fair to require American and German taxpayers that didn't directly commit the injustices and may even have been against it to foot the bill?

I am definitely baffled by the idea of reparations to the descendants, it makes no sense as it assumes that descendants have shared the same degree of pain, persecution, oppression. Paying it to the descendants is not just illogical but also unethical and maybe simply impossible to implement.

+ 1000

It’s sorta entertaining watching the state implode. Biggest problem is Californians leaving/escaping to other states and then continuing to vote Democrat. That’s the definition of insanity. Vote the same way and expect things to be different.

I’m against reparations.

Will outwardly white citizens who are descendants of black citizens also be eligible for reparations?

No, but maybe they can have discounted tickets for the nonexistent high-speed railroad from SF to LA.

The whole reparations debate is a cruel joke. The message to Black people from progressives is always the same: our vision for you is complete dependency on government handouts.

I so hope this gets approved in Cali (but it won’t). It will be interesting to watch the after effects. I think the state could suddenly turn red.

For what? They lost their land in a series of wars. That’s life. Winners and losers. When we eventually have another civil war in this country, do you think 3 generations afterwards we’ll be paying reparations to the descendants of republicans we killed in the war? Nope. They lost. They’re done. Move on.

Seems to me the Republicans are the ones with the guns. If there was another Civil War, I don’t think there would be many progressives left.

Who knows what SF will ultimately do, but Newsom has shut down the reparations for CA.

Why would CA pay reparations? They weren’t a slave state.

The west was also built by the Chinese, who had their labor exploited under horrendous conditions. The transcontinental railroad was almost all built by the Chinese in the west in the toughest parts. Why would CA pay any reparations?

I am an immigrant and my take is that some democrats have major white guilt. They feel guilty because their ancestors owned black slaves so now they want to pay ( of course using someone’s else money).

And why do black people want to get paid? This one is easy. Who does not want to get free money?
