Surprised there's no thread on this yet. I think Bill Maher summed it up nicely, as he tends to do in the face of insane proposals:

Call their bluf. Do it.
I wanna see what happens when pay checks are confiscated and people are forcibly removed from their homes. Light that fuse!! |
|
If San Francisco wants to pay 'reparations' to anyone then shouldn't it be to ancestors of the indigenous groups who resided in the area that is currently San Francisco?
If they want to get more current, then I would say that Japanese Americans should take priority over African Americans. |

It’s not just SF, California also has a reparations committee.
I don’t understand because CA was first stolen from indigenous people, then it was part of Mexico and Latinos lost land and have been discriminated against since then. There used to be segregated schools for Latino students since they were not allowed to go to white schools in many areas. Chinese immigrants were treated horribly as well. Why are the decedents of indigenous, Latino, Chinese, and Japanese going to have to pay reparations? |
| California as a whole has lost its collective mind. |
| Isn’t SF like 30% Chinese American? I really don’t see them being cool with funding this. |
| Anyone who is against the reparations is racist. Period. |
There you are! That didn't take long. |
It's 35% Asian but also about 45% white. This does seem like a good way to make Asians republican. |
| How can they justify something that is like 100 times the net worth of the median white family? That just shows how intentionally unserious this is. Yet more performative justice. |
Many Asians already are Republican due to the utter incompetence of Democrats when it comes to crime - and of course, discrimination against Asians in admissions, etc. |
Exactly. |
You mean like this?
https://www.theguardian.com/us-news/2022/jun/29/california-returns-beachfront-property-taken-black-couple-bruces-beach Seems like a good thing. I guess you are one of those people who thinks museums should not return stolen and looted art. You seem to believe anything that was stolen can not be returned to the victim unless the same can be done for every victim. Lucky the US dos nit work that way. |
| The SF plan seems like a good start. The $200 k California checks likely to issue soon aren’t enough. |
I truly feel that those who want to 'do the work' when it comes to equity ought to give over their own property to indigenous people. In fact, I think that african americans demanding 'reparations' in san fran clearly hate indigenous people and japanese-americans. |
