Or the parents can just not take their kids on planes. Unless the kid was flying to a hospital for life saving medical procedure, he did not NEED to be on a plane. Parents could have driven to their destination, or they could have skipped the trip altogether.

I feel like this is one of those examples of how people have forgotten how to be civil. In my experience, it would go like this:
Mom: ‘hi I’m so sorry to bother you but would you mind tilting your screen or watching something else? My son can see your screen and he’s only 7.’
Man: ‘oh my gosh, so sorry. Here, is that better?’

And scene.

I’m team Man in this situation as described. He has ‘rights’ in this case, she could cover the space with a coat or move seats with her kid or give him an iPad or something. But, I think it would be nice of him to oblige.

I’m team FA all the way tho. Those folks are not paid enough.

Mom is definitely in the wrong. We can't regulate what other people watch on a plane. That is nuts. She could trade seats with her kid if she is that worried. And we wonder why American's have this reputation for being uptight about sex.

dp wow there are a lot of hate on children. Do you not think children are humans and also have need to travel? Were you not children? If you wanted to visit relatives in California your parents would always drive even if you only had a few days to visit? And I thought the anti-pit bull haters were bad...you anti children are even worst!

Actually I wonder where our sense of dignity went. I don't think adults in the past would have done this in front of kids. It would be a common courtesy to behave civilly for the good of society.

Yes, this mother's lack of civility is an appalling example for her young children. She has no dignity, screaming like a common fishwife, eyes bulging and spittle flying from her lips as she vituperates an unsuspecting stranger.

The mother is the one who didn't behave civilly, though. She behaved like a rude and entitled brat who thought she could yell her way into making everyone on a flight watch the shows she wants her little kid to see. I mean come ON. First of all, her kd catching a glimpse of The Sopranos is not going to cause any lasting harm. Second of all, he probably wasn't paying any attention! Third of all, your mom making a spectacle like that and throwing a fit if everyone doesn't accommodate her wishes is not teaching the kid good resiliency skills. Fourth of all, isn't flying bad enough already - really, you need a mom making parents look bad like this too?

If the guy were sitting next to her and she were polite, I would imagine this would have been different.

What are you talking about?
I am not "anti-child." I love children! I have children (and nieces and nephews who are children.) I was even once a child myself.

This is about parents rights to CHOOSE what their children are exposed to. If mom doesn't want her child exposed to stranger's (perfectly legal) actions, she shouldn't CHOOSE to bring them to a confined space where they will be in view of stranger's actions. She can CHOOSE to drive or forgo the trip.

As to my childhood--we didn't have relatives in California, but we lived in California ourselves. And no we DIDN'T visit relatives on the east coast. It's not impossible to survive childhood without cross country flights.

It’s one of the things about travel - have to deal with the expected and can’t control everything, as you can at home or in your community.

Things will go wrong. You will spend more than you intended. You will make compromises, find solutions, manage the situation.

If you can’t accept that, travel will be miserable.

Yeah. It's like a lot of people just hate other people. It's sad.

Up to the parent to figure out a way for the kid to not see the tv, but also: my kid remembers a very violent movie of a nearby person in front of us from about 4 years ago (10 now) on a plane (he randomly brings it up when we travel: “I hope I don’t see that again, it was scary”). I get people watch what’s offered, but it would be nice if in a public situation where people don’t have that many options to move around, the airline could edit them slightly for content. This was on a long flight and my kid didn’t tell us until we got off the plane, otherwise would have moved my kid, distracted him, or discussed in real time. I wouldn’t be the mom that asked another passenger to change his behavior, but I also wouldn’t want to be the passenger that is affecting a kid negatively.

The mom was in the wrong to make that demand. She could find another to distract the kid so he doesn’t watch (sounds like he already did so himself anyway) or just accept that when she takes him out in public he might see something inappropriate. She can take issues with the appropriateness of in-flight movies up with Delta.

That being said if I’m watching something on a plane and it has nudity or sex scenes I get hella embarrassed and turn it off. That guy is kinda shameless.

I'm not excusing her behavior either. I think they are actually both wrong.

You are talking about keeping children from planes and you know I wasn't actually directing my question to you (regarding the hypothetical trip to California) It was an example to get you to think of other people's needs and actions.

The mom was wrong in how she handled it but, the adult man could have been the better person for the kids and turned it off.

Anonymous wrote:wow, I think it was inappropriate that it was available, kids and adults alike shouldn’t have to have a public viewing of highly sexual or violent material. AND that should come from the industry level, not the job of those flying or the flight attendants to mediate. So I agree the man watching was within the right to do so, but…..the airlines really ought to do better.
