Whose side are you on: Airplane Movie Etiquette Edition

I was on a Delta flight yesterday that was about 3.5 hours long. Man a few rows ahead and across from me started watching The Sopranos (offered in-flight). In front of me was a mother and her two children. A girl about age four who was on the window seat and a boy about age 8 who was in the aisle seat. Mom was in the middle.

I did notice that the show was not edited. So there were a few scenes with naked breast and some gun violence. After a fairly long scene with a topless woman the Mom tried to get the man’s attention. He didn’t hear her so she called a flight attendant to complain about the programming. She was particularly upset because her son could see the screen. I don’t know if he was actually actively watching it or not. Flight attendant suggested she and her son switch with her so maybe he could see the screen. She does so, but then loudly starts complaining to the lady across the aisle about how inappropriate it was to have adult material on a day flight. The man watching The Sopranos must have overheard because he turned around, and when he does she starts trying to ask him to turn it off because her children can see the content. He stared at her, says no and keeps watching and this definitely made the Mom furious. She calls the flight attendant again and asks if she can move her family or the man. The flight attendant says there are two open seats towards the back of the plane but that they aren’t together but offers her those. Mom refuses. She proceeds to speak loudly to her kid and anyone who could hear about how inappropriate the situation was and how she’s lost faith in Delta. I think her 4-year-old had fallen asleep at this point and the 8-year-old had a Nintendo Switch so I assume he was occupied (I couldn’t see his face though).

So two questions. Who was in the wrong? (I have a general idea what the consensus will be).

Secondly, should film’s or tv shows with nudity, sex and violence be made available on airplanes?

TIA. Interested in responses.

She should put up a coat or something to block it. Problem solved.

That's crazy. In my experience flight movies are edited for nudity. This was a domestic flight in the US??

The mom was clearly wrong.

She was wrong.

Give your kids a book or magazine and be able to say "hey, I don't want you looking at other people's screens, that's rude."

It's absurd for her to want to control the entertainment preferences of a man in a whole different row. Insane.

Should planes edit? I don't know. It would be upsetting to be sitting next to someone who is watching something super violent. But 1.) you don't have to look and 2.) you could always switch with your kid. It's pretty difficult to see other people's screens, and if your kids are so close to the other person's screen they can view it they are likely kicking/pressing on the seats, which is super rude.

Mom handled it badly obviously and likely could have distracted or shielded but that guy is a sociopath. Of course civilized society has standards for what is acceptable to play public ally within view of little kids! What if he had been watching straight up porn?

Yep.

I was a bit surprised too. I usually fly Southwest domestically but like many others was royally screwed over by them a few months ago so booked with Delta. Hadn’t flown them in a few years. I was watching a film I had seen and it was not edited.

I think shows with graphic content should not be available. That said, given that the content was offered, I think the man was within his rights to keep watching it. The lady overreacted.

Well that's different and that's not what happened.

I’m no prude, but no. Nothing that can’t be shown on regular broadcast tv should be shown on a plane.
