With 200+ schools, there are a couple dozen new principals every year.

Kennedy parent here, who do you think the choice is? I hope the search is genuine and not performative.

Has to be James Allrich at Argyle. Kids feed into that school, he’s familiar with the high school level, and he’s won award after award. Usually, they try to get. a cluster MS principal to move into that position.

Ah yes, I saw his name thrown out. I guess we'll have to see! Didn't know of the preference for cluster MS principals, though that totally makes sense.

I think it's actually pretty rare for a MS principal to get promoted to principal of that cluster's HS. The only two high schools I can think of where the principal came from their school's feeder MS are Blair and Churchill.

WJ?

Often the MS principal tries to get the promotion in their cluster though. Doesn’t always work out. That’s why everything is hush hush. Would be awkward if all the parents and teachers knew their MS principal was trying to move up and couldn’t.

That’s correct, Jennifer Baker led Tilden. Fun fact: McKnight was her principal intern the year before taking the WJ job.

The old Paint Branch principal (now in BCPS - Myriam Yarborough (then Rogers)) led Francis Scott Key. Joe Rubens led Lee MS before moving to Kennedy. Beth Thomas led Kingsview MS, became a director, and is now leading QO. Edward Owusu led Shady Grove MS before Clarksburg. MS feeder -> HS is common.

Yes, MS to HS is common, but moving within the cluster is not. There are just 4 out of 25 current principals who moved from MS to the HS of the same cluster (Johnson from TPMS to Blair, Taylor from Cabin John to Churchill, Baker from Tilden to WJ, and Rubens from Lee to Kennedy).

I don’t see any principal openings listed in the database.

Are you internal? These 4 are still there: Watkins Mill HS posting closes toady 2/20. Darnestown ES closes 2/23. Brown Station ES & Kennedy HS close 2/24.

Interesting. If they want the broadest array of best candidates, why wouldn’t they make those positions visible externally as well?

Of course all the best candidates are internal.

Yup. You have to be very, very good to even come into MCPS as an AP, let alone a principal. The latest external principals that MCPS have hired are a former Community Superintendent in Howard County (who worked with McKnight the year she was there), and the MASSP head who worked in MoCo and left for PG.

I'm not internal to MCPS and I see all 4 principal position openings listed on the public website.

Uh, trust me-you don't. They hire outside candidates all the time and they are usually never very good.

Maybe MCPS officers saw this thread and put them up!

Whitman is getting a principal intern next year (the current AP) but that doesn't mean Robby Dodd is leaving, right?

Correct. He’ll be at the school permanently, but leave for a month to support another principal intern. Source that Whitman is involved in the program?
