If you had to be either Orthodox Jewish or Mormon which would you pick?

Definitely Mormon. The potential mates are much better looking IMO. and I like
To ski, so Utah is a plus. I would just drink in secret.

I have Orthodox Jewish friends who wear jeans under their skirts (the actual prohibition is against dressing like a man) and Mormon friends who drink iced coffee (the actual prohibition is against hot drinks). You got to learn the rules really really really well to be able to bend them!

This is why we are members of the National Shul on 16th -- that rabbi is awesome!!!

Yep, it's "hot drinks," the interpretation of which varies from person to person. The church has released an official statement that says caffeinated sodas are permitted as they are typically served cold. They haven't said anything about iced coffee or tea but since it's meant to be served "iced" (unlike a cup of hot tea that has sat out and gone cold, which was meant to be served hot) many Mormons allow it.

You'll notice that when drinking caffeinated drinks, Mormons will add often add heaps of ice to be safe.

I’m Mormon and this is a very unorthodox and uncommon interpretation of the Word of Wisdom. “Hot drinks” is what Joseph Smith said in the 1800s but it has been specifically interpreted by modern church leaders as coffee and tea.

If you’re a typical Mormon, hot chocolate is fine, iced coffee is not.

Of course Joseph smith was referring to the balance of humors that was the popular health idea of the day but the modern church cares less about origin and more about what current church leaders say.

Orthodox Jew. No question.

This. For me. Absolutely.

Agree. Modern Orthodox 100%.

Neither. Both are moronic.

Mormonism is easier to leave.

You’ll have to give your basement over to the storage of three years’ worth of food and water.

And, if your kid is gay or trans you’ll be shunned. But if that doesn’t bother you then go ahead…

All way more mild than Orthodox Jew rules....

Thanks for making it clear why Mormons are less fringe.

If you’re Mormon you’re basically giving up your entire Sundays - YES

have to spend them only with family - NO

You’ll have to give your basement over to the storage of three - NO years’ worth of food and water. = ONE year

if your kid is gay or trans you’ll be shunned - Hilarious, because every large LDS family has at least one gay member, and guess what, the gay people aren't shunned either! At least if their family is following church teachings.

X1000

Yeah, seriously. Like LGBTQ+ is at least 10% of the population and both religious Jews and Mormons have huge families (like 10 kids) so do the math.

And these super weird rules are exactly what makes these religions so cool. Like shake/spin a chicken (Jewish) and wear bizarre long undies (LDS). It's like joining a secret club. You got to be a part of it to know all the rules!

The key is being a rebel within the religion. Be the one who sees that the prohibition against bacon technically only applies to the priests (true!) or that alcohol of one's own making is technically allowed under Smith (true!).

And before anyone comments about how being a "rebel" isn't following the religion, look at it's creators. Abraham smashed idols, Smith rejected Christianity, Jesus himself was a major reformer of Judaism. All the founders of religions are always rebels. So be like the founders and not the followers!

I like that, PP.

(If forced to, I choose Mormonism over Orthodox Jewish. But don't even try...)

Same. The local bishop recently found me and invited me to church and I found myself recoiling. Crazy how a benign to be phone call was such a trigger.

+1 I've needed years of therapy to deconstruct all of the f*cked up things about my Mormon upbringing.

Yes, but don't play this game in the first place. It's a really mean game that makes fun of real-life people, some of whom read this board.

+1000. I’m not either religion, but these types of questions are just plain mean. The religion forum has some really nasty trolls.

I have multiple Moden Orthodox friends, and agree with this. I think of the 2, women are better off in Modern Orthodox than Mormon (also have Mormon friends).
