yes, of course -- in many ways, being vegetarian would make it easier to keep kosher, since you wouldn't have to worry about kosher meat, separate dishes, or deciding whether meals were milk or meat. |
| Mormons are nuts, and I would really hate having to tithe, but keeping Kosher would be really annoying. But the theology in Judaism is so much more rich and stimulating. That’s a tough one. I’m going to go with Jewish because there seems to be much more freedom to practice how you want and pick and choose which laws to follow without being shunned. |
The thread title says Orthodox Judaism. Not a lot of picking and choosing there. |
I know orthodox women who don’t cover their hair, wear skirts, etc. They certainly seem to pick and choose. |
|
I will choose Orthodox Judaism. I can easily adjust to their way of life and practices. I have a fondness of Judaism, the Hebrew language, Jewish history, customs, etc. Also, from a theological perspective Judaism is more respected than Mormonism.
Let's be honest here the majority of people would classify Mormons into the cult category. Mormons are too far off the grid to take them seriously. I don't even view them as a legit religion, but a cult. Mormons are a different animal all together. Way too much racism, white supremacy, and insane practices for me to consider joining their flock. They are into some weird crap. Also, I despise their missionary work and their incessant desire to convert others. Orthodox Jews leave people the heck alone, but Mormons are like vultures always trying to prey on new blood. It pisses me off that Mormons send their young adult children on missions to manipulate people into conversion. What the Hell are they doing in Latin American trying to convert people? Leave people alone! I wish they would take their colonizing mindset and shove it!

JFC. Navigate away from the page, and don't return. It's really freakin' simple. |
Plus, bacon wrapped scallops. |
The bolded is low-key the most astonishing response in this thread. When you think about it, it's absolutely insane. |
Say WHAT? Have you left Mormonism? Took me a notary and a pro bono lawyer. You can't simply stop attending because they keep coming. Neighbors, missionaries, ward members, etc. Even if you ask them not to. If you move, the "Strengthening Church Members Committee" tracks you down at your new address and sends new people. In order to get them to stop coming, you need to have official letters sent to your Stake President and/or Bishop, who then will likely want to meet with you to discuss reasoning. To avoid this, "Quitmormon" was established where lawyers have written form letters that people can get notarized. It is a big, big set of hoops to jump through. Even if you yourself leave, your children will remain on the records of the church locally. Even if you all are removed, your information is still kept in the vaults in Salt Lake. Even if you are removed and your baptism is cancelled, your relatives can re-baptise you by proxy after you're dead even if you said you didn't want it. |
omg I want those right now. Guess I pick Mormonism! |
| Orthodox Judaism has SUCH a wide range. You have the Brooklyn Hassidic population, Chabad, Modern Orthodox, non Modern Orthodox.... I am a Reform Jew and have more in common with a Mormon than a Hassidic Jew in Brooklyn. I also work in the medical field with many Modern Orthodox Jews and you wouldn't "know" they were Orhtodox without realizing they keep Shabbat and eat Kosher. |
This just shows what you don’t know. I would also pick Orthodox Judaism because at the end of the day Judaism is a nonhierarchical religion and LDS is the opposite of that. |

I am Jewish and I think they are both cool.
Yes, I get that all organized religions are like socially acceptable cults but it's so much fun to "belong" to something where everyone likes you (or is at least nice to you). Scientology, Catholicism, Evangelism, Puritanism, Quaker, Shaker, Shinto, Buddhism, Muslim, Atheism. They are all awesome cultures inside our own culture and I love ALL the diversity. The only thing that upsets me a little is that some of these beautiful cultures are disappearing (Hawaiian and American Indian) and others are taking over so the ENTIRE reason that they were so awesome (diversity) no longer applies. I wish I was a practicing Jew so I could help the diversity because I know Judaism is a dying religion but I just don't have the energy (and I'm a rationalist). Oh well. I hope the next gen revives these cool religions. |
If you think Catholics are all nice to each other, you don’t know many Catholics! Until relatively recently, you couldn’t even get the Poles and the Irish to go to the same church, so you’d have a st. Patrick’s up the street from St. Stanislaw. And then a St. Francis de Assisi another block over for the Italians. Get a Jesuit in a room with an Opus Dei guy and see how much community there is ! My vote would be modern orthodox, then Mormon, then old school orthodox. |

Mormons are some of the nicest people I have met, with wonderful community, so I choose them.
But I'm not gonna do either one. |
