If you had to be either Orthodox Jewish or Mormon which would you pick?

You’ll have to give your basement over to the storage of three years’ worth of food and water.

And, if your kid is gay or trans you’ll be shunned. But if that doesn’t bother you then go ahead…

All way more mild than Orthodox Jew rules....

Thanks for making it clear why Mormons are less fringe.

I’ll play with a twist. Would you rather be black or latino? Trans man or trans woman? Offended yet?

I don’t think most posters understand the difference between Orthodox Jews and the Hasidim or Haredi.

That was my thought, too.

Both groups have ideologies that are deeply offensive to many of us...asking which group you'd choose to be affiliated with isn't a neutral question.

It's a theoretical question, not a binding decision. Sheesh.

OP is inviting people to talk shit about two minority religious groups. It's an awful question.

I'll pick Mormon.

This. And apparently plenty of our friends and neighbors are happy to engage.

But when it’s one of the daily attacks on Christians, that’s ok and you never complain, amirite?

Typically, I do complain. It isn't right to demonize religious people.

I would be either but I would be a rebel! I have Orthodox Jewish friends who wear jeans under their skirts (the actual prohibition is against dressing like a man) and Mormon friends who drink iced coffee (the actual prohibition is against hot drinks). You got to learn the rules really really really well to be able to bend them!

This is why we are members of the National Shul on 16th -- that rabbi is awesome!!!

I'd pick Orthodox Jew as long as it wasn't on the strict side.

I have two different groups of friends who are Orthodox Jews and while both are active in their practicing, neither is extremely strict. Both practice modern Orthodox Judaism (wives don't cover their head except in temple, they wear pants, wear skirts/shorts/dresses above the knee except in temple, wear normal swimsuits). They keep Kosher, their kids go to Jewish schools, they observe Shabbat but have modern appliances with Shabbos settings so they can be used during that time, etc.

One of my best friends is an ExMo so I know her extended family pretty well. They're terribly boring people. They are incredibly nice and always ready to help in any situation, but I've been on vacation with her and her parents before and it was so miserable and unfun.

There is a lesbian Mormon group.

I’d be neither. Neither is accepting enough of others and I don’t believe that is what God wanted.

Not many religions are "accepting" of people as they are, since the point of religions is to motivate people to be better than who they are. Does the church love and welcome people struggling with any and all weaknesses and sins, yes.

If you’re Mormon you’re basically giving up your entire Sundays - YES

have to spend them only with family - NO

You’ll have to give your basement over to the storage of three - NO years’ worth of food and water. = ONE year

if your kid is gay or trans you’ll be shunned - Hilarious, because every large LDS family has at least one gay member, and guess what, the gay people aren't shunned either! At least if their family is following church teachings.

Yep, it's "hot drinks," the interpretation of which varies from person to person. The church has released an official statement that says caffeinated sodas are permitted as they are typically served cold. They haven't said anything about iced coffee or tea but since it's meant to be served "iced" (unlike a cup of hot tea that has sat out and gone cold, which was meant to be served hot) many Mormons allow it.

You'll notice that when drinking caffeinated drinks, Mormons will add often add heaps of ice to be safe.
