Lochte Robbery Story: True or False

Honestly these countries should have advised the athletes that crime is likely and if it happens -- just turn over your phone/money/etc. and don't talk to the media and don't even think about reporting it bc it could somehow turn into you being charged. Just consider it the cost of getting to go to an Olympics -- needing a new phone and wallet. Though I think either Bentz or Conger said that after it got out that this had happened but before anyone started paying attention (so likely after Lochte's mom blabbed but before the Billy Bush interview) -- all 4 had to meet with the USOC and the State Dept who advised them all NOT to talk about it so that it'd blow over quick bc talking about it or reporting it could result in adverse actions. And apparently after they left that meeting, Lochte went across the street to the beach, found Billy Bush and gave an interview -- that he now claims was while he was still drunk.

He caused his mess. Reports are that he isn't "doing well" now and feels his world is crashing down on him -- prob bc he lost all 4 sponsors. But maybe next time -- listen to the State Dept when in a foreign country!

How about next time behave in a civil manner especially in a foreign country, don't urinate on private property, don't vandalize property and tell the truth instead of making up a whole lot of crap? Also, don't think that because you are an American, foreign laws don't apply to you.

What are you going to blame Feigen for, that cost him $11k?

Feigen lied to protect Lochte. He got off light because if the gas station owner had decided to press charges he would not have been allowed to plea bargain. When in a foreign country follow their laws just as we expect foreigners who come here to follow our laws.

I'm the first PP that thinks -- listen to the state dept. For Feigen -- I blame Lochte. Reality is it would have flown under the radar if Lochte hadn't gone and talked to Billy Bush, which is what alerted Brazilian authorities in the first place; otherwise there is so much crime that I don't think they would have pursued this one or at least not for days/weeks once everyone was gone. Feigen got stuck paying 11k bc he was the last one left there and made the error of earlier saying -- I was sleeping I didn't see anything -- and then later having to revise it once Bentz and Conger told all the details.

Feigen committed no crime, no vandalism, no "false police report". He was the victim first of a shakedown by the security guard and then by Brazilian government -- and has been blamed by the American media for it. That's reality.

Because the IOC is so corrupt that Brazil was able to buy the right to host the Olympics, many of the Olympians were robbed, either at gun point or knife point, or had items stolen.

I hate how sponsors drop people the second there is controversy. Athletes are held to higher standards than elected politicians. I'll never buy another Ralph Lauren product. Chickens!

It is hilarious how some posters go into contortions to defend a couple of sleazebags who feel they have some sort of right to violate the law in a foreign country and then expect no consequences.

They think that because Brazil is a third world country Americans can do whatever they want. Of course, if Lochte and his compatriots had been black or Hispanic these same people would be less inclined to spring to their defense.

Lochte should face a lifetime ban not only for his lies and attempt to malign a foreign host nation but because he still will not candidly acknowledge that he was wrong. Even in his latest interview, the jerk cannot bring himself to admit what he did and that is why I would like to see him banned from competitive swimming.

Yes, Americans - even white Americans (gasp) - are required to follow the law in a foreign country. Such a revolutionary concept ........

+1,000 Good grief. How is this hard to understand? Depressing that anyone has to spell this out.

It's corporate America -- why would they hang on to him, when they can terminate their employees at will if they did something like this? His contracts obviously had clauses saying they could be terminated for any wrongdoing -- and the sponsors get to decide what is wrongdoing. If they need an Olympic medalist -- there's plenty out there. If they need male swimmers with medals -- plenty of those too. Why stick with someone who has (whether rightly or wrongly) tarnished his name (for now) when they can go with someone who is squeaky clean?

Meh, no one is entitled to millions of dollars from a company for showing up and having pictures taken with their product one or two days a year. Sponsors can set whatever terms for the contract they want and the athlete can accept or not. Ryan accepted and then he most likely violated the terms. The company has every right to pull out if the think he will screw with their brand. It's not as if he was fired - they are just no longer interested in paying him millions a year so he can get drunk and act stupid. Sorry, not seeing how the sponsors are the villain here.

You are both ridiculous.

He didn't cold cock his girlfriend
He didn't rape or murder anyone
He didn't brandish a gun
He didn't brutalize helpless animals
He didn't gamble on his sport
He didn't use steroids

He peed behind a building, tore down a poster, and embellished some details....

You people are ridiculous.

You would be surprised at how consumers react to brands that have spokespeople they find offensive. It was about maintaining the brand and market share. To continue to see Lochte's face on advertisements for Speedo and Ralph Lauren after his behavior would have been damaging to those brands. So they wanted to cut him loose as quickly as possible. Lochte was too thick to think about the consequences of his actions -- that they would ruin his ability to make money. His star was descending due to age and a lackluster performance at the Olympics but he still could have maintained his endorsements for a few more years had he not acted like an arrogant boob.

I'm not white, so I don't subscribe to the "white privilege" thinking. And I feel like when you are travelling to another place (country, city, or neighbor's house) you should respect the people and place you are visiting. I even make an effort to learn a few important phases of the local language so as not to be a rude, offensive, Stupid American. I also stated that he was a filthy savage for urinating on the wall, especially when there was a bathroom just inside. However the response that came, a gun in the face, is not a proportional response. Just like what is said in the black lives matter movement, Pulling out a gun for a minor incident is just wrong. If you need to draw your weapon to deal with public urination, and the perp is non-violent, you need to find a new profession.

That didn't happen though. He admitted that was embellished.

I agree with everything you've written except for the depiction of Brazil as a third word country . You don't host the World Cup and Olympics back to back if you're a third world country , with one characteristic of a third world country include being severely financially strapped . Brazil is none of that , in fact there are only 3 countries in the entire American continent that are capable of hosting the World Cup and Olympics two years apart and that is, the US, Canada and ....Brazil . With a nominal GDP of 1.77 trillion dollars , it's the 9th largest economy on earth . Obviously this doesn't mean there isn't abject poverty in Brazil but can America really give lessons on poverty to anyone ?
I've wondered aloud if this narrative of Brazil as a third world country didn't play a role in the behavior of lochte and his fellow sleazy comrades. I mean it's pretty obvious they did what they did because they thought there'd be no repercussions due to the preconceived notion of Brazil being a no man's land . After all, these guys were in London four years ago right?

I'm pretty sure the people who perpetuated those acts you cited faced the music . You come across as developmentally challenged
