I don't get that impression at all. All the evidence indicates they're trying to do a thoryough and fair investigation. Not sure where you are getting these ideas from.

They could have directly asked what McKnight knew about complaints against Biedleman when she promoted him. She would have said she couldn't answer and it would be clear she knew and is complicit in protecting him.

Really? I think if they had asked her that it would be clear she wasn't involved so please stop with the wild speculation and try to focus on the actual facts. Sure, I get your rabid about finding fault with MCPS but this is getting a bit crazy.

I love how the rabid pro mcps poster is keeping this thread alive...lol

I hope the rapid pro-MCPS poster is getting paid over time for this PR work on an anonymous message board. Although the posts are doing more harm than good, since seeing sycophants feel compelled to toe the party line like this and deliberately and repeatedly deny facts and evidence, tells you a whole lot about the kind organizational culture that’s festering within MCPS…

You mean like McKnight exhorting all admins at a district meeting to stand and chant “MCPS Proud” whether they wanted to or not? 😵‍💫

How do you know they didn't want it?

Spoke to several people who were present.

Hearsay, Your Honor!

So much juicy gossip in this thread though!! Sure, a lot of it is probably made up but it's fun reading all these wacky conspiracy theorieis.

Most of these posts were made by the same 2 bocce obsessed cranks, that start all these anti-mcps threads. Sure, it's unfortunate this went on during the previous administration's tenure but it will also help them avoid similar issues in the future.

Previous admin? McKnight resigned already!

No, these incidents happened before she was super. I get that facts are often inconvenient for your anti-MCPS crusade.

True but why let facts stand in the way of a good narrative?

A fact is something true. The statement "these incidents happened before she was super" is a bald-faced lie.

That they keep repeating, despite multiple corrections.

I know people keep repeating the lies. Everyone knows she wasn't super when this all went down. They just want to find fault with McKngith regardless of the facts.

This isn’t even smart trolling because MCPS itself has admitted that the promotion went down while McKnight was super. It seems like your only play is to confuse.

You're moving the goal posts. Last week you were blaming McKnight for these incidents that went on before her tenure. Now that someone has called you on it you just focus on the promotion. Got it.

Yes, they aren't even focused on Biedleman. Their goal is to discredit McKngiht so nothing else matters including the truth.

Yeah it's so silly to care about whether MCPS leadership is willing to place staff and student safety first. Like, I am sure Biedleman is just a bad apple and the 18 complaints against him were all BS and there can't possibly be any others like him in the system that are still being protected.
Anonymous
A different example but as a MCPS teacher I appealed a student special education decision. I don't know how often staff does that, but I was appalled that my student had been unfairly denied services and I had the child's parents' blessing to appeal. The MCPS lawyer denied my appeal with no reason given. That decision was turned around so quickly I can't imagine they took it seriously, but there wasn't really anything else I could do at that point as neither the parents nor I had money to throw at an outside attorney. I believe MCPS makes the most expedient and least expensive decision every time, even if that means ignoring evidence or failing to do more than a cursory investigation. Just my two cents.

Folks are focused on both, but there is some indication Beidelman will be held accountable for his actions.

However, there's no indication that the systemic issues that allowed his abuse to flourish and in fact intensify over recent years has been addressed.

There will always be abusive sexually aggressive men in leadership. The question is whether the system identifies and removes them, or whether the system protects them. In this case, MCPS under Dr. McKnight protected and promoted such an individual, hence the focus on her and the system she leads.

I know if they were really concerned about MCPS safety this conversation would be about Beadleman but instead they're fixed on McKnight largely because they can't stand that an AA woman is running the schools.

Anonymous wrote:I have no idea what is going through the mind of the "she wasn't in charge" person, who I actually think is different from "Leave Joel Alone!" person but here's a timeline.

Even if we leave aside her as term Director for Secondary Leadership Development Programs, Dr. McKnight returned to MCPS as a Deputy Superintendent in summer 2019.

From 2019 - 2023, Central Office staff confirmed they heard rumors and stories of Beidelman's behavior

In June 2021, she became Acting Superintendent. The following events all happened after[/i] that time:

Fall 2021: At least one teacher reports Beidelmen to Safe Schools Maryland

May 2022, the union informed the district of “egregious reports” of sexual harassment at Farquhar.

Spring 2022: At least one more teacher reports Beidelman to Safe Schools Maryland

February 2023, the social studies teacher targeted by Beidelman for sexual harassment files an official complaint with more than 20 documented instances of abuse and harassment.

March 2023, workplace bullying case is filed, including clear allegations of retaliation

Spring 2023: Central Office had access to school wellness survey results showing FMS had the second-lowest results of any MS in MCPS

July 2023: Dr. McKnight personally approves the promotion to principal of PBHS

August 2023: Washington Post story breaks and Beidelman is put on leave

October 2023: Khalid Walker, who closed/refused to investigate several cases against Beidelman, is given a 12K raise and a promotion

October 2023: Washington Post asks about the promotion, Walker is reassigned again at his previous salary ($132K) to work on "special projects" in the HR division

Taken together, it's pretty clear that something rotten in MCPS and it has been rotten before McKnight came to the scene but also while she was in senior leadership positions including Acting and then permanent Superintendent. She did not "clean up" the mess. Rather, she promoted a serial sexual harasser and then promoted the guy who protected him.

Literally the only reason we know about any of this is because of the Washington Post, not McKnight and certainly not the rest of the Central Office.

+1 million & thanks to the teacher who tried (& failed) to appeal the special education decision for your student who was denied services. Former public school teacher, union supporter, MCPS parent, and FULLY upset community member. Not buying the troll saying folks are just attacking McKnight because of her race. This timeline clearly implicates her lack of leadership in this matter. Honestly, the last straw for me is Walker's promotion (?!?) which was scrapped only because, once again, the WaPo uncovered it. Who would have thought local journalists would shine such a spotlight? Still so grateful for their reporting, without which, MCPS would have done nothing to address any of these issues.

PP, Black, White and posters of other racial backgrounds have all posted here to share that they're upset and disappointed with the state of things in MCPS and with Dr. McKnight's leadership. Yeah there probably are some racists out there who don't like Dr McKnight just because she's Black, but I think the vast majority of posters on here want better leadership, period and don't care about their race.

Of course. Which is the sane thing to do. But the pro-MCPS posters who keep repeating ridiculous talking points that are verifiably untrue do not care about facts or the truth. They have an agenda. I just don't know why they think posting that crap anonymously on DCUM is doing anything, especially since we keep calling them out and refuting their lies.
Anonymous
None of this will keep pro-MCPS posters from using the race card or Dr. Mcknight from bringing the Black pastors to future hearings to show that they support her. She did the same thing when the unions voted no confidence as she was interviewing for the job - got the Black pastors to send a letter of support that basically said anyone who criticized her was doing it because of race.

It was a cynical and calculated move and had it not happened, maybe we would have had a different superintendent who actually reformed the culture at Central Office.
Anonymous
The biggest takeaway for me after all this...

For once this is not going away. The Post has done Yeoman reporting. Even when they tried to shuffle Walker to a few positions, they were all over it.

If MCPS, the BOE, and Council think this one will just blow over- for once it will not.

Agree there are a dozen people between McKnight and Biedleman who would've reviewed and recommended his promotion. McKnight is just going on what she's been told by those who are familiar with and responsible for these decisions, but of course, we want to blame her regardless of the reality. I also find it odd this thread focuses on the super from years after Biedleman harassed all these people.

How is this any different from the CEOs of companies who get held responsible for the poor performance of her hires and direct reports?

We have always said either Monifa was in cahoots with the cover up or she was such a poor leader that she allowed it to happen under her watch due to poor management.

It sounds like you think this was a case of poor management, but the superintendent of a school is still responsible for the people who report to her if they fail to do their job. That's what comes with the territory of any leadership position. The fact that you can't seem to grasp that is mind boggling.

What is the point of the Superintendent approving promotions if she won't so much as ask about school climate survey results? I find it implausible she didn't know what was going on. She obviously knew about the complaints and was aware he was being moved to placate the Faruquar staff. A promotion of a principal is not some little administrative task.

Especially since she literally reserves the right to veto the person. We went through the principal selection process and the candidate we all picked was punted back by Monifa and we had to come back for a second round of candidates and interviews. At least, that's what we were told.

On a somewhat tangential note: Former MCPS Joshua Starr is critical of Monifa and MCPS's current purported stance to DEI and how he thinks it's ingenuine and performative:

Yikes. If Joshua Starr is willing to go public against Monifa and MCPS....
