"The Maryland Public Information Act (“PIA”) protects the confidentiality of personnel records. Md. Code Ann., General Provisions Article (“GP”), § 4-311(a) (2014, 2017 supp.). A personnel record includes “an application, a performance rating, or scholastic achievement information.” GP § 4-311(a). It also includes “those documents that directly pertain to employment and an employee’s ability to perform a job,” Kirwin v. The Diamondback, 352 Md. 74, 82-84 (1998), and records “relating to hiring, discipline, promotion, dismissal, or any other matter involving an employee’s status,” Montgomery County v. Shropshire, 420 Md. 362, 378 (2011). In other words, the personnel records category is very broad. Public employees (and their supervisors) can obtain their own personnel records under the PIA, but they can’t get someone else’s, and no other third party can get theirs. GP § 4-311(b)." https://news.maryland.gov/mpiaombuds/2018/07/13/personnel-records/ |
Leadership is right on the MCPS organizational chart. |
"All formal complaints relevant to the investigation were investigated and addressed by MCPS"
Yeah I'm going to need way more on this one. "investigated and addressed?" Didnt he have 18 accusations? |
Just what I predicted from the beginning. A big uproar, and then nothing.
I’m sure they all sat around and had a restorative justice circle to set a good example for all of the kids and parents. They worked it out and the victims faced their aggressor and now we move on. Nothing happened. |
I read addressed there as responded to, rather than validated or resolved. |
The only way we'll get details about who did what is the press gets their hands on it. MCPS and the BOE are bound by the MPIA.
We should probably look at amending the MPIA to allow for bad actors like this to be named and shamed. But I doubt that's the sort of thing you can get enough people to care about to appeal or overturn. In the meantime, anyone with a conscience and the guts to leak this info to the press, please do us that community service! |
We are going to need the BoE to tell us in detail what happens to the key leaders who ignored. We need to press Jawando to pressure the BoE to do this. I'm confused though how these people are protected under MPIA. How come we found out about Beidleman if that's the case? |
Because MCPS staff members spoke to the Post reporters about their own experiences. As did Beidleman himself. |
Yes. This is why the press is vital to democracy. Without the press exposing these things, government officials use laws and bureaucracy to obscure the truth. |
Curious why the other news outlets (WTOP, moco360, etc.) don’t have more coverage on this. Thank you WaPo and moderately MoCo for great journalism. Let’s keep the pressure going as it’s the only way things will change! |
MCEA Blasts MCPS for Failing to Protect Students and Staff from “Alleged Predator”

MCEA: "We, also, find it curious that Jackson Lewis uncovered 30,000+ documents during their investigation, but somehow could not find emails sent by MCEA members and staff to the Board of Education, MCPS, and Superintendent McKnight outlining the harassment claims." |
