Why don’t Americans give a f*** about what they eat?

You think the French with their butter and smoking are making better choices? Or the Germans with their processed sausages and copious amounts of beer? Or the Brits (I'm not even going there as far as alcoholism goes).

Over to Asia, white rice is metabolized basically the same way as sugar, and while I know many an auntie who swears by the health properties of ghee, I hate to burst their bubble...

Americans are fat because they don't move. It's not because their food is that much worse.

You sound woefully misinformed about nutrition. White rice is not metabolized the same way as sugar. It also has a bunch of vitamins and protein.

Ghee (saturated fat) is actually much healthier than trans-fats.

Lifestyle issues definitely impact why Americans are fatter on average. But the quality of our food is also poorer than in most other countries, and it also makes a difference.

Actually white rice has a hugher glycemic index (75) than sucrose i.e. sugar (65). I didn't say butter was a health food (see comment re: the French), only that copious amounts of ghee are also not very good for you.

My DD is lactose intolerant so she started drinking Almond Milk. I searched for the purist almond milk I could find, that only had Almonds and Water, and could only find 1 brand (I think it may have salt or 1 other ingredient). The solution? Make my own. It's quite simple, tastes better and I can make it in smaller batches. You can do the same for Oat Milk.

Yes more labor! Just work harder! That’s a winning solution for all!

So now I need to make my own oat milk, bread, hummus and deli meat. Anything else?

Condiments, salad dressings, and snacks. Oh, and forget about going out forever

Why is almost a third of the population able to manage a normal weight while shopping at regular grocery stores and eating out occasionally? I would bet they make some of their foods and buy some of their foods too. You make it seem like the stores and restaurants are selling poison to the masses.

I don't eat junk food or dessert and virtually no bread / pasta and yet I'm 50 lbs overweight. I also work out every day since being vaccinated and before COVID, so try harder troll.

Just because they're normal weight doesn't mean they're healthy. I know of plenty of skinny people who eat a bunch of junk and have serious health issues.

Too little too late. I’m sure you didn’t always eat like this.

I guess they are the lucky ones with healthy pancreas and metabolism.
Unlucky ones like me have to always watch for added sugar everywhere hoping I'll be able to avoid diabetes in the future.

My DH is super skinny. He has high cholesterol and he was so surprised himself! I keep telling him, stop eating Mc burger and fries every other day. Stop with 8 Dr. Peppers per day, stop with stupid cherry pie, the cheap kind.
As all men... he heard nothing that I was saying. He thinks thin equates to healthy!
So, Dr. told him, slightly elevated cholesterol and he decided that he needs to get more skinny! WTF! Average educated, pretty good job guy.
Now he is taking it seriously but for years he acted like he was immune to health issues due to crap? Like all men he now decided that he will go to another extreme, no fat for him of any sort. I mean, he slowed down with Dr. Pepper but still, nothing I said registered. I have told him and asked him, would he ever take around 8 teaspoons of sugar in one sitting, as in eat it out of the spoon? They, he seems perfectly ok to have 8 teaspoons of sugar over 6 times per day.
And guess what? Our primary provider would not order blood tests for years since it was clear that DH is in "superb" health! Yes, based on his meager weight!
His dad eats in the restaurant all the time, I am p who posted that he has Philly Cheesesteak and The Garlic Knot on a weekly rotation! And fancy brownies and cookies every single day.
I guess, all is a perspective, DH does eat many meals that are healthy that I cook, yet, he seems to think that Hostess pie and Mc burger ( cause he only gets one burger) and a large Coke (never diet) is no big deal.
So, yes, many Americans do not give a crap about what they eat, or imagine that they are ubermensch!

They ate very healthily growing up. Sure, some canned veggies, which was the norm. His mom cooked all the time. Somewhere in the mid-80s, everything became about fast food and soda, soda, soda... He eats super healthy at home, I cook a ton, all good healthy foods. But, the "snacks" are this. He loves his Mc and his stupid fruit pies. His mom was overweight, his dad is overweight, but not obese. His sister is overweight. His brother has cholesterol, so it is probably genetic too. His mom had major heart issues and died very young, you would think that would scare him... I would like to sign him up for that British show, Supersize vs Superskinny. Honestly, it is a miracle his cholesterol is not through the roof.

I bought “made-in-store” salsa from giant today. Tasted a spoonful and was surprised at how sweet it tasted. Checked the ingredients and sure enough it had added sugar. Like WTH? Why, why, why must there be sugar added to everything!?!?

Preservative, same as extra salt
