Where was this taken? The video says Wuhan province but it can't be-- they are turning away people for being from Wuhan.

That video is worrisome. It’s like an apocalypse movie came to life. Especially the bridge scene with the cars.

All those ppl in the hospital! Are they all sick? Why are they all in the hallways like that? That increases their chance of getting the virus if they didn’t already have it.

I didn’t see the video but lots of social media shows long lines and cram hallways. It’s a catch 22. Go get help and you are not with the virus but roll the dice you catch it there.

DP. The two things I saw that concerned me were:

1. Communities that were blocking their own roads. The physical barriers keep supplies out. Someone is bound to try that here, BTW.
2. Food shortages. Hungry people get sick faster. Europe had a bunch of famines right before the Black Death arrived from Asia.

Well, someone has to block them. The government banned them from traveling and they try to escape anyway.
5 million left Wuhan before it got locked down. These 5 million are out there.

But these are neighborhoods within Wuhan blocking off their small section. Imagine if someone decided to block Falls Road in Rockville. It wouldn’t keep people from leaving MoCo into DC or HoCo. But it would slow down first responders and keep Grocery stores from replenishing.

Since we are quoting news sources

https://www.businessinsider.com/wuhan-coronavirus-face-masks-not-entirely-effective-2020-1

"N95 respirators filter out most airborne particles from the surrounding air, preventing wearers from breathing in particles down to 0.3 microns in diameter. These types of masks are often used when air quality is poor due to wildfire smoke or pollution, and they're designed to be tightly fitted. However, the coronavirus is 0.12 microns in diameter."

Look, viruses don’t typically free float, they travel on droplets which are usually 5 microns or larger and will be caught in an N95 mask. The CDC recommendation for N95 masks is for health care workers working with the sick. That, plus eye protection will help. Is it a guarantee? No, as the case of the doctor in Wuhan shows, not even a full hazmat suit is a guarantee, but for those of us who aren’t planning on wandering into a hospital full of coronavirus ill, a mask and eyewear is a good compromise.

What you need is NBC or CBRG gas masks if it really comes down to that point. (Most sold out already on Amazon). During the meantime, wash your hands and disinfect all surfaces are the best things you can do right now.

Typo. CBRN

Don’t spread misinformation. N95 masks absolutely will help. You just need to wear them properly.

Please do yourself a favor and research on the subject instead of an article from the Washingtonpost and I say that for your true protection. N95 helps ONLY if a patient sneeze or cough directly at you, that plus you need to wear gloves and eye protectors at a minimum. NBC mask / hazmat suit is what you REALLY need.

The CDC and every major health organization in the world disagrees. A full bubble suit with your own air supply would be best but not particularly practical for most, is it? Eye wear is a good add, as there is some evidence that people are being contaminated through the eyes. A mask plus eye protection is a good compromise for most of us who would be minimizing contact with others in the case of a pandemic anyway.

This is kind of fairly dire.

Yup.

It started in December. Now it’s the end of January. There should be some people who recovered if mortality is 15%. Where is the info about recovered ones?

China is being real aggressive and that is worthy of respect.

Relax. We’re not at that point. Yet.

So, for the people whose health anxiety gets triggered by this sort of thing, what can you say to them to keep it in perspective?

Sometimes all-powerful governments can do good things.

I guess just hope that China gets as draconian as it needs to? And read the article someone linked to above where the author mentions various steps folks can take to reduce potential exposure.
