This explains so much about the entitlement and bullying behavior we see from our kids.

I'm certainly not defending anyone who wears blackface.

I'm only talking about the events that happened on Saturday. I'm not wild about taking the side of kids wearing MAGA hats, or boys who are on a pro-life march for that matter. But I believe fair is fair, and the events have been unfairly characterized and reported.

False.

This reporting from the Washington Post turned out to be inaccurate.

A Native American man steadily beats his drum at the tail end of Friday’s Indigenous Peoples March while singing a song of unity urging participants to “be strong” against the ravages of colonialism that include police brutality, poor access to health care and the ill effects of climate change on reservations.

Surrounding him are a throng of young, mostly white teenage boys, several wearing “Make America Great Again” caps. One stood about a foot from the drummer’s face wearing a relentless smirk.

Nathan Phillips, a veteran in the indigenous rights movement, was that man in the middle.

In an interview Saturday, Phillips, 64, said he felt threatened by the teens and that they swarmed around him as he and other activists were wrapping up the march and preparing to leave.

Misleading. The boys didn't swarm around him. He walked up to the boys who were assembled on the steps.

Phillips, who was singing the American Indian Movement song that serves as a ceremony to send the spirits home, said he noticed tensions beginning to escalate when the teens and other apparent participants from the nearby March for Life rally began taunting the dispersing indigenous crowd.

Misleading. They were not taunting the dispersing indigenous crowds. They were singing a school cheer as a response to taunting by the Black Hebrews when he arrived.

Phillips said a few people in the March for Life crowd began to chant, “Build that wall, build that wall,” though such chants are not audible on video.

“It was getting ugly, and I was thinking: ‘I’ve got to find myself an exit out of this situation and finish my song at the Lincoln Memorial,’ ” Phillips recalled. “I started going that way, and that guy in the hat stood in my way, and we were at an impasse. He just blocked my way and wouldn’t allow me to retreat.”

False or misleading. He walked PAST clear steps to the Lincoln Memorial if that was his intended goal. He later said that his goal was either to diffuse the situation, to protect the Black African elderly men, OR to teach the boys a lesson.

This makes your ENTIRE post not credible. They were doing the "tomahawk" motion and chant to the tribe. And you just prove my PP point. Glossing over this as it didn't exist. And it was perhaps the most egregious and offensive part of the interactions.

Nobody denies that. That has nothing with the teens mocking a Native American elderly man.

Who CHOSE to get in their face. Please include that part. It's important.

He didn't, he walked through their crowd. There were 100 of them, and 4 Native Americans. He was not a threat.

He was in no way a threat. But he walked right up to them, and got in their face, playing the drums. He was way too close in terms of personal space. It is hard to understand what he did as a gesture intended to calm things down.

It is completely inaccurate to say that the boys refused to get out of his way. And if you feel the boys were mocking his music, at least admit that he approached them.

Approach? Yes. "Got in their face?" Um, no. There were a handful of tribe members and a large crowd of boys. So, you are right he was no threat.

The boy's reaction: stopped, staring at him, inches from his face, while his classmates were yelling, laughing, etc. You think that's a normal reaction? You'd be ok with that if someone on the street did that to you? Doubtful.

Can’t wait for college app time. Get your story straight MAGAs. Trump might be impeached by then.

I am often surprised by how people on DCUM react to things in completely different ways from how I was raised. (My favorite example is the strong dislike for hosting out-of-town family for more than a few days in your home since I was raised with my aunt, uncle, and their 5 kids staying with us every summer and/or Christmas vacation for 2 weeks at a time.)

Can someone please explain to me what is meant here by "getting in your face?" If I'm at the shopping mall the weekend before Christmas with 5,000 other shoppers and need to leave, I say "excuse me" and gently nudge my way through the crowds to get to an exit door. The past 200 times or so when I've done this, people stepprf aside or at least tried to maneuver their bodies so that I could pass with my shopping bags. I tried to not step on their feet or hit their kids on the head with my bags of gifts. If one of these fellow shoppers decides to plant himself in the middle of the mall's hallway and refuses to let me go past him, am I the one "getting in his face" or is he the guilty one? If I expected that he would make way for me, as did the other hundreds of shoppers, am I wrong to have assumed that? Is it now fair for me to be called an instigator?

I'll go out on a limb here and guess at what was going on in the mind of Mr. Phillips that day. He feels that he can offer what he considers medicine to heal the negativity in the crowd by sharing his chant and drumming with the crowd. It actually seemed to be working as he moved through the group of kids. They settled down, or at least took their attention away from the awful Black Hebrew men. But then he encounters the smirking kid who refuses to make way. Does he just continue on by side-stepping this little jerk who is resisting the attempt at diffusing the negativity? The kid is actually working in direct contradiction to his efforts and trying to get his friends riled up again, and it works. Based on what I've read about Phillips, I'm guessing that he felt he had something to offer the smirking kid that could alter his negativity, and so he stayed there drumming and chanting in the face of smirker. We can disagree on whether that was the right move by Phillips, but it doesn't change the fact that Sandmann's son (their name was affirmatively released by the PR firm he is using, so I don't think this should be off limits here) behaved in a qualitatively different manner than every other kid there that day.

I've posted before, and I grew up in and live in the area where the school is. I've readthis boy's account. Here's my ongoing problem, and why even as I Catholic there is no way I would pay for the "privilege" of sendi g my kid to this school.

Most attendees of this school are white. Many are extremely wealthy. Our area is heavily segregated by both race/ethnicity and class. These kids grow up in a bubble of white privilege, as their parents and grandparents before them. They have very little life experience with people who aren't like them. Even their adult chaperones are utterly ill-equipped to know how to handle encounters with the likes of the Black Hebrew Israelites, which anyone who has ever lived in a diverse city ( I have) would know. I believe the kid when he says the chaperone gave them permission to do their school chants - an utterly ignorant way to deal with people like the BHI. People who have lived in cities would know that you ignore crazy and walk away. No doubt these kids and the adults with them think most black people are like BHI, because they have almost zero experience to the contrary. I am unconvinved by their one token black student in attendance. I know the school, and I know what a rare commodity students of color are. Diocese of Covington has zero interest in purusing financial aid to truly diversify their schools beyond the few minorities who can pay full freight. It's why I refuse to attend church in the diocese and go across the river instead.

Bottom line - these kids have zero cultural competence, and no adults who see this as a problem who will help prepare them for an increasi gly diverse amd complex world. So despite what many people rightfully see as appalling behavior, I guarantee you they have no understanding of why people think this. Neither do their parents ( or, they just don't give a damn). And here we are. In 2019.

Now it is the Diocese's fault for the young man smirking?

This conversation has gone from politically motivated to judging over 40 children, over a smirk, and seeking to deny them "life, liberty and a pursuit of happiness."

You are a very simplistic thinker, aren't you? I never said it was the fault of the diocese, but if you lived here then you would understand how rigid its leadership is and how, yes, that does translate into this kind of narrow minded thinking among its parishioners. You would probably love it, though, judging by the tenor and depth of your reasoning ( if you want to call it that).

No I have kids this age and nephews who are MAGA. I feel sorry for the kid and how his parents are having him spin this. To be a man own up to responsibility, treat veterans with respect. Good can come out of this and growth.

This thread should probably be locked. It has outlived its usefulness (if there really wasn't any usefulness to begin with).

Don't you wonder why only a snippet of the full video was released to begin with? Could someone have a motive here?

So, the social media mob is outraged at a teen in a MAGA hat staring at and smiling at a Native American.
No violence at all. No hateful words were exchanged.

Meanwhile, we have seen many instances of people actually attacking and assaulting veterans and we hear crickets.
We are currently in a partial govt. shut down. We have an illegal accused of mass murder. We have a crisis at our border with at least 2 more caravans heading north.
So many more important things to fret over.
But, this is the focus of too many going on 3 days now.
I have no doubt that if the kid had not been wearing a MAGA hat, this would have gotten NO press at all.
So, we know what this is really about.

The Catholic Church needs to rethink the idea of using teenagers to advance a political position.

In fact, they might rethink all of their political activism. Other churches should do the same. It's fine to have moral positions, but this kind of activism is not in the interest of the either the church or the government. Maybe they are starting to get it.

Area poster here. Yes, this is why I refuse to send my kid to Catholic HS, especially around here. They already had my grade schooler praying the rosary for life at school last week - totally not cool IMO since he is very young amnd rightfully has no opinions - informed or otherwise - on reproductive issues. Nor does the school teach a consistent life ethic curriculum. I have to do that at home and will be keeping my kid home from now on when they do these kind of politically minded stunts during school hours.

Typical smear campaign.

Enjoy your bubble. I choose to expose my kids to the world as it is. Sorry the truth gets under your skin.

I am amazed at the answers of people who are parents, presumably.

This surely explains the entitled brats in our schools. Mommy and daddy stand behind them. And then their preshus get smacked down by life and they wonder where they went wrong in their parenting.

Who was smirking and mocking the other? Phillips had every right to walk up those steps to complete his march. The lengths the MAGA folks will go to defend their bigotry continues to astound.
