Political Discussion
| Anyone else find it sad that if someone is wearing a MAGA hat it reminds a liberal of their utter failure in 2016? |
|
I'm not reading all these comments. Those defending this kid(s) are pathetic.
I'll leave out the characterizations and stick to what the videos (plural) show: -Black Israelites basically yelling at everyone. This includes the native americans. There is always -ALWAYS- a group like this at protests. Always. They are to be ignored. They are entitled to say what they want, however offensive you and I find it. Again. Ignore. You see them engaging with the kids AND with the NAs. -Mr. Phillips indeed walks between the groups. He says it was to diffuse the situation. You can attribute anything you want to him, I suppose. But, that is his explanation. He made it clear. And he is a veteran and, I'm guessing, capable of identifying a tense situation (which this was). There is nothing to contradict him. -The multiple videos show when he walked up to the group, the boy with the hat was not even by him. There was about 1-2 feet (I'm guessing 18") in between him in the crowd. He was banging his drum, a peace song. Uncontroverted. Boys started acting like teenagers: dancing and one bent over shaking himself in front of Mr. Phillips. Classless, perhaps. Stupid. But, willing to give a pass as they are teenagers. -I personally did not hear "build the wall" or "Go back to Europe" on any of the recordings. And frankly, I don't really care. -At some point, Mr. Sandmann makes his way into the frame. He invades Mr. Phillips personal space. I don't know whether he "blocked his path" or not. But, there were clearly boys on all sides of the tribe members. The boy was too close for what is socially the norm. And if you look at the videos, and the stills taken, the boys past his shoulder were clearly riled up by his action. Making faces. Laughing. Jeering. It was a provocative act. You know it. I know it. And I doubt anyone on this thread would tolerate someone coming up to him/her like that. -The most disgusting thing is the mocking by way of the "tomahawk" song and motion. Absolutely vile. I've seen no defense of this. Only conservative outlets/bloggers glossing over it. It was racist at worst. Ignorant at best. Along with this, no sign of any chaperones to stop the boys. I don't know whether the boys intended to come off as racist, ignorant fools. But they succeeded. The above is a fairly neutral recitation of the facts, supported by the video, imo. I see parents on here all the damn time criticizing parents for making excuses for their kids behavior. Not letting the kids take responsibility for their actions. And here we are. People doing just that. This is a school that chose to march in a protest that routinely displays gruesome posters and chants that opposition protestors support murder or are murderers. Do they all? No. But, they are certainly among those who do. I've been in the mix with the RTL protestors for years (having worked downtown near the mall. I also am a product of Catholic schools, who sends delegations to the RTL march and whose teachers have posted in the past on FB about being "excited for some conflict"). So they don't get to play the sensitivity card to anything bad an adult may say at a protest. Yelling. Shouting. Sometimes bad behavior on BOTH sides. It is par for the course at protests. So, no, they get no pass for being "kids" who should be catered to. The school put them in that environment. Perhaps they should prepare their students and chaperons more appropriately. Are the kids racist? I don't know. It came across that way to me. But, they were most certainly ignorant and disrespectful. They were wrong. (And I have friends closely affiliated with the management of that school. Good people. Kind people. I don't paint all of the school with this brush. But they need to do much better). |
No. You are absurd and dishonest for your false pious and sanctimonious nonsense. I’m more than done with you, and know it’s just that the attempt at intimidation and disrespect has deserved repercussions for the student. |
Amen! |
| The black Israelites were AWFUL. That's what should be in the news |
Nobody denies that. That has nothing with the teens mocking a Native American elderly man. |
I've posted before, and I grew up in and live in the area where the school is. I've readthis boy's account. Here's my ongoing problem, and why even as I Catholic there is no way I would pay for the "privilege" of sendi g my kid to this school. Most attendees of this school are white. Many are extremely wealthy. Our area is heavily segregated by both race/ethnicity and class. These kids grow up in a bubble of white privilege, as their parents and grandparents before them. They have very little life experience with people who aren't like them. Even their adult chaperones are utterly ill-equipped to know how to handle encounters with the likes of the Black Hebrew Israelites, which anyone who has ever lived in a diverse city ( I have) would know. I believe the kid when he says the chaperone gave them permission to do their school chants - an utterly ignorant way to deal with people like the BHI. People who have lived in cities would know that you ignore crazy and walk away. No doubt these kids and the adults with them think most black people are like BHI, because they have almost zero experience to the contrary. I am unconvinved by their one token black student in attendance. I know the school, and I know what a rare commodity students of color are. Diocese of Covington has zero interest in purusing financial aid to truly diversify their schools beyond the few minorities who can pay full freight. It's why I refuse to attend church in the diocese and go across the river instead. Bottom line - these kids have zero cultural competence, and no adults who see this as a problem who will help prepare them for an increasi gly diverse amd complex world. So despite what many people rightfully see as appalling behavior, I guarantee you they have no understanding of why people think this. Neither do their parents ( or, they just don't give a damn). And here we are. In 2019. |
Who CHOSE to get in their face. Please include that part. It's important. |
He didn't, he walked through their crowd. There were 100 of them, and 4 Native Americans. He was not a threat. |
|
Everything you read says such and such "felt" threatened.
Can't help what you "feel". That's on you. |

The Catholic Church needs to rethink the idea of using teenagers to advance a political position. In fact, they might rethink all of their political activism. Other churches should do the same. It's fine to have moral positions, but this kind of activism is not in the interest of the either the church or the government. Maybe they are starting to get it. |
Now it is the Diocese's fault for the young man smirking? This conversation has gone from politically motivated to judging over 40 children, over a smirk, and seeking to deny them "life, liberty and a pursuit of happiness." |
This reporting from the Washington Post turned out to be inaccurate.
|
Typical smear campaign. |
He was in no way a threat. But he walked right up to them, and got in their face, playing the drums. He was way too close in terms of personal space. It is hard to understand what he did as a gesture intended to calm things down. It is completely inaccurate to say that the boys refused to get out of his way. And if you feel the boys were mocking his music, at least admit that he approached them. |
