If my kid did this, I would consider it intolerance and harassment. There would be consequences. It's odd how acceptable lack of civility has become in our country.

Ditto. Two kids have been kicked out of my son’s school for racist or homophobic social media rants. Many Catholic schools have a very low tolerance for this type of behavior.

I am a Catholic high school graduate and parent of two kids who go to a Catholic school. There are many Catholic schools - like the one I went to and the one my kids go to - for whom social responsibility, social justice, preferential option for the poor, human dignity, etc. are intentional parts of the curriculum and culture and where this behavior would not ever be tolerated (and probably wouldn't happen anyway). Then there are schools like this that focus on the abortion issue to the exclusion of anything else and teach their students that Republicans = prolife, good; Democrats = prochoice, bad and prop up white supremacy, subjugating women and punishing the poor all in the name of supporting "pro-life" candidates and ideology. It's gross.

The elder is Nathan Phillips, an Omaha elder who is also a Vietnam Veteran and former director of the Native Youth Alliance. He is also a keeper of a sacred pipe and holds an annual ceremony honoring Native American veterans in the Arlington National Cemetery.

Phillips is also the subject of a previous racially-based incident when he was taunted and harassed by Eastern Michigan University students who were dressed stereo-typically as Native Americans. As reported in FOX 2 News, he was yelled at and hit by a thrown beer can.

In a previous interview with Phillips, he told Indian Country Today that returning from Vietnam was not easy as a veteran. “People called me a baby killer and a hippie girl spit on me.”
