Can a wall supporter please answer this? What’s a non-political answer why this only became a crisis after Ds took hold of part of Congress?

I think the massive caravans heading north this fall was the tipping point.

Yup and another onis leaving CA this month. At this rate we will need a wall at Mexicos border as well as ours.

There's another one? They're probably trying to get to California for the free health care. Nice incentives the liberal governors and mayors (like NYC) are throwing out: break our immigration laws and our citizens will provide you with free health care.

In the meantime, our own ctizens are struggling with $1000 premiums.

Mexico is talking about closing their southern border.

Then problem solved. In fact, wouldn't it be cheaper for Mexico to build a wall and for the USA to pay for it? It's a much shorter boarder to cover and most of the people coming to America these days are NOT Mexican.

One could argue its also a great way to destroy the government, just as the Rs have always wanted.
GOP thinking:
Our National parks were ruined in the shutdown- hey let’s close them for good and sell off to drill!
Border control weren’t paid b/c fed employees - hey, let’s privatize with Eric Prince!
Federal Courts closed — ding ding!

I could go on. This isn’t just for a fight. There is a plan. Ruin the IS and sell off our assets and privatize the crap out of everything.

I agree. And there are proposals to open some agencies and not others. For example, to fund the IRS so the Trump voters can get their refund checks on time. But not to open EPA and Interior.

Apparently issuing refund checks are essential to the safety of human life.

False crisis, you mean like the food pantries preparing to serve coast guard members? https://connectingvets.radio.com/articles/food-banks-support-coast-guard-families-through-government-shutdown

Or the food safety inspections that aren't taking place? https://www.nytimes.com/2019/01/09/health/shutdown-fda-food-inspections.html

Or the increase in TSA agents calling in sick? https://www.thrillist.com/news/nation/tsa-agents-calling-out-sick-government-shutdown

Or the damage to our beautiful national treasures in places like Joshua Tree and Yellowstone?

Or the contractors and small businesses that are losing money and won't get it back?

Or the families that are shut out of Smithsonian museums?

One thing I do know is the shutdown will cost a sh!t ton of money to taxpayers, as people like me and others have to work overtime to make up for the weeks we lost. My job has constant deadlines and I'm going to have work late nights to meet them once I return. And that's time and a half.

Never mind the lost revenue at national parks and museums.

The stupidity is mindboggling.

But not FEMA apparently. Go figure.

It is sad that Jared is actually one of the few senior White House officials engaging on this topic. Elections have consequences.

State employee here with a serious question.

We were notified our budget will not be impacted unless the federal shutdown lasts until March. We may anticipate layoffs at that time.

Is there a difference between furlough and lay-off? Can you collected employment security if you have been laid off?

First world problems...

Meanwhile tell the 32 families that died in Texas at the hands of illegals in 2018 that their grief is "stupid" and "mindboggling".

What will you tell the families whose children die of e coli infections or whose planes crash because there aren't enough air traffic controllers willing to work for free because you're too busy playing politics to run the Government like a civilized country?

I can’t fact check your numbers of deaths from illegal immigrants right now. I will remind you that the rate of crime among illegal immigrants is lower than native born Americans. I will also remind you that trump tried to spout lies about terrorists streaming across the southern border that were refuted by statistics from his own government.

But my point now is:

Why no attention paid by Rs to the much larger number of deaths from gun violence?

We live in a first world country. Or at least last year it was a first world country.

The amount of crime from illegal immigrants should be 0. Because they shouldnt be here in the first place. That is what I think you're missing here. Even one crime by one of them is 100% avoidable.

The Republicans I know are sensible people who understand that laws address problems but do not eliminate them, that issues are adjusted not deleted. The government can increase or decrease legal or illegal immigration, not wave a magic wand and vanish the existing and future illegal immigrants.

They have been quiet lately, drowned out by others.

The amount of crime committed by anyone should be 0. There's always a way crime could have been prevented. Maybe we should spend the wall money buying alarm systems for every home in the United States.
