If it happens—which still seems unlikely—it’ll last for no longer than six days.

Is your thinking a short term CR will pass? I don't see a full year happening.

Why does it seem unlikely?

To me it seems more likely than previous years when it did shut down.

Yup, a short term CR will likely pass. A shutdown just seems unlikely to me because Republicans can’t possibly be this stupid, right?

What makes you think they aren’t? It’s not exactly the best and brightest we’re talking about here.

Eh, I've been through a lot of near-shutdowns and mini shutdowns. More often than not, Congress pulls a short CR together at the last minute or on the weekend. Here, where the Speaker's willingness to buck the FC is the only real impediment and the FC don't have the votes for a different Speaker, it just seems unlikely we won't have a CR.

I could be wrong! Nobody thought the 2018 one would happen either.

If it happens, I think air travel will become the issue again within 3-5 weeks, if it's not resolved sooner.

I agree with you.

3-5 weeks is pretty long. The tipping point last time came when people missed their second paychecks.

The government staff in my office are giddy with anticipation, planning for their free vacations (all UMCs so they have a stash of cash to tide them over until back pay comes in)!

But we the contractors are dreading the disruption of work. In my case, my task ends on 9/30, funded each quarter, and new work tasking hasn’t been approved. So, I’ve been tossing papers and I will pack up my personal stuff this week with no expectation to return. But I don’t really care at this point because I despise my job except for the pay and benefits. I could really use a month off because I worked in the office every day.

I keep checking for news updates and just have a knot in my stomach about this, thinking about the musical chairs I’ll need to play with our financial accounts if this ends up being a dragged out shutdown. Or not just easily being able to plan time off if needed.

Also, I have no idea if the projects I’m working on will be funded. Several involve focus reviews and/or IT systems upgrades, but if we don’t get expected funding then some of this may be cut back. It’s demoralizing feeling like the work I’m doing this week may end up not even mattering or will have to be cut down in scope or delayed.

Can anyone commiserate?

Unless you know you're going to be in dire financial straits, I don't think it's wise to complain too much about not getting time off or being forced to curtail some expenses. I know it's not a comfortable time, but it's not the end of the world. You will get through this. Some other families won't.

Strongly disagree. Being expected to report to work each day (and incur commuting costs, etc) and having planned leave cancelled while having your pay for work performed deferred indefinitely by the wealthiest country in the world is fundamentally unacceptable regardless of whether you can make do financially and everyone should be vocally complaining.

I know if we shut down I will never see the people who were supposed to be delivering work product for us by the end of the fiscal year again. I’ve been asking them get their stuff to me early, but if there are problems with the final product I am going to have to start from scratch with a new team after the shutdown. Again. A total racket!

So, after 56 pages of total BS, is this happening?

Is today October 1st? No? Then we don’t know yet.

That's not true. Safety sensitive positions continue to get drug tested.

I MIGHT be one of those giddy feds. Personally I’m just tired. Always too much work and too little resources. And my unit has ZERO contract support. I don’t want a long shutdown. 7-10 days would suffice lol.

And AT THE SAME TIME, I am very frustrated with us having a shutdown. It stupid. It’s inefficient and a waste of taxpayer money.

I sort of agree with both of you, in that we’ve been down this road before and there’s almost always a CR. That said, it’s been a while since the last shutdown and this Congress seems particularly… nuts? Petty? Stupid? All of the above? I don’t know. I both don’t want it to happen, for so many reasons and also am completely exhausted with all there is to do and with so little support.
