If it happens—which still seems unlikely—it’ll last for no longer than six days.

Just curious-- why do you say a shutdown seems unlikely?

Is your thinking a short term CR will pass? I don't see a full year happening.

Why does it seem unlikely?

To me it seems more likely than previous years when it did shut down.

I seems to me it is is likely, and if it happens, it will be long. This is based on previous experience not wishful thinking.

Anyone else struggling to focus this week? I keep checking for news updates and just have a knot in my stomach about this, thinking about the musical chairs I’ll need to play with our financial accounts if this ends up being a dragged out shutdown. Or not just easily being able to plan time off if needed.

Also, I have no idea if the projects I’m working on will be funded. Several involve focus reviews and/or IT systems upgrades, but if we don’t get expected funding then some of this may be cut back. It’s demoralizing feeling like the work I’m doing this week may end up not even mattering or will have to be cut down in scope or delayed.

Can anyone commiserate?

Unless you know you're going to be in dire financial straits, I don't think it's wise to complain too much about not getting time off or being forced to curtail some expenses. I know it's not a comfortable time, but it's not the end of the world. You will get through this. Some other families won't.

Even putting aside the financial woes--which are real!--it can be hard just not knowing what will happen. I made myself sick with anxiety during a series of almost-shutdowns during the Trump administration.

OP, is there a chance that you can write an outline of a financial plan for a period of no pay, and put it in a drawer and promise yourself not to revisit it until the shutdown actually happens? Then just do the work you'd normally have scheduled to do, but spend time at the end of each day documenting the status of projects (I need to do z calculations for Project M)? Basically do a few things to prepare and then try very, very hard not to think about it?

Good luck to you.

I'm nervous this won't get resolved until the 1/1/2024 auto CR kicks in, and that would be really rough for everyone to get through the three months of no pay, in addition to the holidays. Really hoping they can figure something out quickly.

That would be an absolute disaster. I really don’t think that would happen. Too many employees have to work without pay. Not tenable!

Even one missed paycheck for people that have to actually work during a shutdown is dangerous IMO. These are people who often make extreme sacrifices to serve already.

There’s an automatic cr?

Eh, I've been through a lot of near-shutdowns and mini shutdowns. More often than not, Congress pulls a short CR together at the last minute or on the weekend. Here, where the Speaker's willingness to buck the FC is the only real impediment and the FC don't have the votes for a different Speaker, it just seems unlikely we won't have a CR.

I could be wrong! Nobody thought the 2018 one would happen either.

If it happens, I think air travel will become the issue again within 3-5 weeks, if it's not resolved sooner.

Yup, a short term CR will likely pass. A shutdown just seems unlikely to me because Republicans can’t possibly be this stupid, right?

I agree with you.

My office has not said a work officially. I do not give it any thought until they do.

That is foolish. At the very least, have a plan for missing a paycheck.
