When a wall/fence/barrier would work, and many of the Democrats who are vehemently against a wall/fence/barrier now, but they were for it just a few years ago, it is pertinent.

Border security is good. A wall/fence/barrier/steel slats/whatever/bead curtain is useless. I am in favor of comprehensive bipartisan immigration reform, achieved through good old fashioned compromise. I am not in favor of Trump dictating terms to Congress so he can get "a win" and do nothing to actually solve problems.

+1 No one with any expertise on this border security thinks this wall is a good value for money. But Trump doesn't care about CBP workers forced to work for free as he shuts down the Government to appeal to his base.

A wall / fence would not work. There is a wall now. People drop their children over it, tunnel around it. Most illegal immigrants overstay visas. I know this as I have friends who work for CPB.

The fact is, "Border security" is not synonymous with wall. And the PResident was offered a bi-partisan immigration/border security package last year. He said he would sign it. Then he reneged. He's not interested in "Border security." This is on him.

And while were at it, let's not forget that he has flip flopped on this issue (the wall) NUMEROUS times, including in the last couple of weeks. AND HE OPENLY LIED when he said Mexico would pay for it. Since that was his position, we should not even be having this discussion and the Gov't should not be closed.

Whatever happened to the Secure Fence Act of 2006 under Bush?

https://georgewbush-whitehouse.archives.gov/news/releases/2006/10/20061026-1.html

"This bill will help protect the American people. This bill will make our borders more secure. It is an important step toward immigration reform."

- President George W. Bush, 10/26/06

yes, a fence
But the act included multiple components to keep the border secure. I don't remember hearing people complain about the points below:

More than doubled funding for border security - from $4.6 billion in 2001 to $10.4 billion this year;
Increased the number of Border Patrol agents from about 9,000 to more than 12,000 - and by the end of 2008, we will have doubled the number of Border Patrol agents since the President took office;
Deployed thousands of National Guard members to assist the Border Patrol;
Upgraded technology at our borders and added infrastructure, including new fencing and vehicle barriers;
Apprehended and sent home more than 6 million people entering America illegally; and
We are adding thousands of new beds in our detention facilities, so we can continue working to end "catch and release" at our Southern border.

And you can thank Hillary and Barack for supporting this initiative. In other words, none of this is new. But I wonder how old many of you posters are b/c you can't seem to connect the dots going back in time.

Looks like the shutdown will be underway til mid January.

A large swath of the federal government is shut down — and so are negotiations to reopen it.

President Donald Trump’s standoff with Democratic leaders over the border wall dragged into a third day on Monday, with no hopes on either side of a Christmas deal to break the stalemate. It’s been 48 hours since the last real discussions between Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.) and Vice President Mike Pence, and there's growing sentiment in the Capitol that the closure could drag on until mid-January.

Please explain how this compares to Trump’s proposal.

Why is Trump acting like a child? No one wants this stupid wall.

From WaPo, here is latest polling on support for the wall:

A recent CNN poll showed that 61 percent of respondents oppose building a border wall without any funding from Mexico. Only 33 percent of respondents support such a plan, including 75 percent of Republicans, 32 percent of independents and just 4 percent of Democrats.

Trump needs to stand down.

Everyone will be a Democrat after Trump. He will burn it down.

He thinks everyone coming to the US is walking in from Mexico. Like there are no planes.

Does your poll indicate what percentage of residents in "border states" oppose or support a Wall? That would be a more significant data point since it's border state residents who have to deal with the brunt of illegal immigration that a Wall is designed to prevent.

I'm sure you know why D.C. and the surrounding suburbs are subject to such blatantly obvious de facto segregation, including actual physical walls in the wealthier areas.

Funny you think the big fat Cheeto will do anything. Trump is the biggest loser ever to take office. The only good thing Trump is doing for America is ensuring only the clinically insane will vote Republican in the future. He has destroyed the GOP.
