Trump Threatens to Shutdown Government if No $ for his Border Wall

Not enough Republicans on board with that, most importantly, not McConnell. He might change his mind with pressure from a Democratic House, but then Trump will attack him. So he will have to pick a team. My guess is that he will eventually turn against Trump, but that's just a guess.

Shutdown til mid-January?

A large swath of the federal government is shut down — and so are negotiations to reopen it.

President Donald Trump’s standoff with Democratic leaders over the border wall dragged into a third day on Monday, with no hopes on either side of a Christmas deal to break the stalemate. It’s been 48 hours since the last real discussions between Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.) and Vice President Mike Pence, and there's growing sentiment in the Capitol that the closure could drag on until mid-January.

Trump tweeted he handed out a contract for part of the wall today. Is he lying or doing the government procurement process himself?!

He was lying.

How long do you all seriously think this shut down will last? I'm a new federal employee who didn't have enough AL to go home for Christmas. I'm thinking of flying to my family now.

I've been trying to follow the news to see if a vote is even scheduled. Odds on being shut down Thursday and Friday?

I’d go. Only way it will be open Friday or Monday is if McConnell ends 60 vote requirement for cloture and I don’t even think he has 50 votes to pass it. Earliest date would be Jan .4th for a vote, Jan 7th to return to work and that assumes a lot.

Definitely go home. No chance it's open before the new year.

I think the shutdown will be 3-4 weeks minimum with the potential for up to 6-8.

This pretty much guarantees the shutdown won't last past the end of January/start of February.

However, most IRS activities will stop during a shutdown. These “non-excepted” activities under the plan include:

Issuing refunds
Processing Form 1040X amended returns;
All audit functions and examinations of returns;
Processing paper tax returns that do include remittances; and
Taxpayer services, such as answering taxpayer questions.

Are you serious? So the first vote would be January 4th?

WTF does that have to do with a wall. Or, um, a fence.

When a wall/fence/barrier would work, and many of the Democrats who are vehemently against a wall/fence/barrier now, but they were for it just a few years ago, it is pertinent.

Border security is good. A wall/fence/barrier/steel slats/whatever/bead curtain is useless. I am in favor of comprehensive bipartisan immigration reform, achieved through good old fashioned compromise. I am not in favor of Trump dictating terms to Congress so he can get "a win" and do nothing to actually solve problems.
