There is a couple of those kinds of trolls. Boost (their random school) and try to tear down (basically any T30).

Over it.

Not reading this thread, and going off topic, but after going through the application process with several very different kids, I have visited and studied a lot of colleges. I think the most underrated schools are the small tech and engineering schools. People talk about the small liberal arts colleges a lot (SLACs), but the STECs should get more love.

It's not weird at all. It's because Penn State is a rarity in that it offers rollimg admissions starting aug 1. Your kid applies early(as mine did) and enters senior year knowing they have at least oneacceptance under their belt. My DC got into UVAin-state so turned down the Penn State acceptance (for engineering). You could have learned tgis with a quick google search before wasting everyone's time

I think Penn state is popular because it is relatively easy to get into. It is close by but not too close and they have good academics.

NYU

What?! Everyone trashes NYU

Weird, right?

NYU is obviously a great school. The students are obviously super qualified.

I can only offer a theory. One I hadn't really thought about before this thread.

In the years my kids have been applying to colleges, only once did I encounter a parent obnoxious and ill-informed enough to say "my kid's college is better than yours." Their kid was going to NYU, mine to a top 10 LAC, for whatever that's worth.

Rankings are problematic, even within an institutional category. At best, they can give you a sense of what might be more likely to be the "better" school for a typical qualified student. But hopefully we have all taken the time to know our kids well night not to push them one way or another based on that's best for a "typical" student.

NYU is clearly a fantastic school for some students. Maybe even the best school, for them.

But some colleges that try to out-advertise others are perhaps just a little more prone to attracting students whose parents some of us might find irksome.

To be fair, my sample size is minuscule! One parent! That's why I previously gave this no thought. But maybe others have had similar experiences with ridiculous parents from schools oft cited on this thread.

It's a shame, really. That kind of behavior ultimately detracts from their child's achievements. For some students, NYU is ideal. Same with UVA. Same with every other school mentioned in the thread.

IMO, it's insecure parents who are the problem. Not the schools. But maybe some schools invite this by over-marketing themselves, prioritizing low admit rates over applicant fit?

Perfectly describes UVA parents.

Perhaps that is because they are OOS and paying $75K to $80 a year and don't know in-state tuition at UVA is only $16K a year. Perhaps they don't know how difficult it is to get in from NOVA and how prized it is if your student wants to go on to grad school because you can invest the difference and have enough to pay for grad school later. Perhaps they don't know how difficult it is to get in. The 75th percentile of last year's entering class is a 1500 SAT; a 34 ACT and a 4.49 GPA.

No one is saying it isn't a good school. It is simply more about reputation being higher in DCUM bubble than outside of it.[/quote]

For the reasons given above. If you know public universities in the United States, UVA comes in 2, 3, or 4 for U.S. News & World Report public school rankings. For 27 years UVA ranked 1, 2 or 3, always above Michigan, but that changed when USN&WR threw in the pell grant stuff (which UVA has no control over). Nevertheless, it is a top public university in the United States.

But here's the thing, the 30 year Net Present Value of going to UVA is slightly lower than Virginia Tech and also lower than Maryland. Over a lifetime of work, it is nearly $500K less than Duke and $675K less than Harvard. It is It is only $35K more than George Mason. It just isn't going to make that much difference. For earnings, the major will matter more.

Anything in the NE and Midwest outside of HYP and Notre Dame. The South from UVa and Clemson to Duke Tulane Ole Miss Rice Bama UGA Vandy and SMU and everywhere in between just offer so much more — fun, sunny weather, booming regions, and gregarious peers.
