It's so obvious where people and/or their kids were rejected. What a ridiculous thread.

Harvard obviously. But also Duke. This generation of students at both schools is not having a good time.

NYU

What?! Everyone trashes NYU

Weird, right?

NYU is obviously a great school. The students are obviously super qualified.

I can only offer a theory. One I hadn't really thought about before this thread.

In the years my kids have been applying to colleges, only once did I encounter a parent obnoxious and ill-informed enough to say "my kid's college is better than yours." Their kid was going to NYU, mine to a top 10 LAC, for whatever that's worth.

Rankings are problematic, even within an institutional category. At best, they can give you a sense of what might be more likely to be the "better" school for a typical qualified student. But hopefully we have all taken the time to know our kids well night not to push them one way or another based on that's best for a "typical" student.

NYU is clearly a fantastic school for some students. Maybe even the best school, for them.

But some colleges that try to out-advertise others are perhaps just a little more prone to attracting students whose parents some of us might find irksome.

To be fair, my sample size is minuscule! One parent! That's why I previously gave this no thought. But maybe others have had similar experiences with ridiculous parents from schools oft cited on this thread.

It's a shame, really. That kind of behavior ultimately detracts from their child's achievements. For some students, NYU is ideal. Same with UVA. Same with every other school mentioned in the thread.

IMO, it's insecure parents who are the problem. Not the schools. But maybe some schools invite this by over-marketing themselves, prioritizing low admit rates over applicant fit?

Perfectly describes UVA parents.

Ah, so you can generalize an entire population of more than 25,000 people? Good to know.

Awww, did your kid not get into one of these schools, Dobbs dork?

UChicago. It is a very good school but has become the go-to ED2 option for rich kids in DC. It is hard to say it is too overrated I guess since it is almost an elite safety school, if that makes sense.

Take it to politics. No one wants to read this in the college forum for a myriad of reasons

Very hard to take seriously someone who lumps ND in with HYP. And then goes on to praise southern schools for their locations and weather. You are one of those people who evaluate schools based on football program, aren't you?

NP Why do people assume that someone who criticizes something does so because they didm’t get into it? Some posters are fixated on the idea that everyone else wants what they do. It sounds so stupid.

It's not weird at all. It's because Penn State is a rarity in that it offers rollimg admissions starting aug 1. Your kid applies early(as mine did) and enters senior year knowing they have at least oneacceptance under their belt. My DC got into UVAin-state so turned down the Penn State acceptance (for engineering). You could have learned tgis with a quick google search before wasting everyone's time

I think Penn state is popular because it is relatively easy to get into. It is close by but not too close and they have good academics.

Yes, it's easy to get into (if the applicant has the base stats) because it has rolling admissions

Ha! Omg. Thought the same. My kid hates the heat and humidity…and southern stuff. To each their own. Southern schools are a huge tend now. Prob tik tok Bs with Bama rush and such. With abortion laws and other backward stuff and a trump election…oh well.

Ha. I’d argue they are both severely underrated. Kid is headed to an Ivy- but those are both great schools.
