What is the most overrated school popular among the dc metro area crowd?

I never understand the Penn State obsession NOVA moms have lately. It's just wierd.

What does this have to do with the question? And it is arguably a much stronger school with better outcomes than most of the state schools in the T25s. It's just impossibly hard for DCM kids to get into.

Frankly, I will never forgive them for the abuse scandal

There are only 4 state universities in the top 25 schools at USNWR. Which of those 4 is UNC, “a much stronger school with better outcomes.”

I always laugh when the perennially underrated University of Michigan is listed as overrated.

NYU

What?! Everyone trashes NYU

Chicago feels like everyone's 1B in the elite admissions crowds here (the top backup where a lot of people end up, especially from high-end private schools). It is a great school but isn't talked about in quite the same way in the Bay Area.

FWIW, people here, at least on DCUM, devalue Georgetown and its reputation outside the DMV.

Ya tech was for solid B students with maybe 1100 SATs on a good day back when I was a kid. Still the same today just with more test and grade inflation.

This has got to be a troll post. Or clearly someone whose kid did not get in.

+1
Absolutely no serious person would write the above about VT today.

Weird, right?

NYU is obviously a great school. The students are obviously super qualified.

I can only offer a theory. One I hadn't really thought about before this thread.

In the years my kids have been applying to colleges, only once did I encounter a parent obnoxious and ill-informed enough to say "my kid's college is better than yours." Their kid was going to NYU, mine to a top 10 LAC, for whatever that's worth.

Rankings are problematic, even within an institutional category. At best, they can give you a sense of what might be more likely to be the "better" school for a typical qualified student. But hopefully we have all taken the time to know our kids well night not to push them one way or another based on that's best for a "typical" student.

NYU is clearly a fantastic school for some students. Maybe even the best school, for them.

But some colleges that try to out-advertise others are perhaps just a little more prone to attracting students whose parents some of us might find irksome.

To be fair, my sample size is minuscule! One parent! That's why I previously gave this no thought. But maybe others have had similar experiences with ridiculous parents from schools oft cited on this thread.

It's a shame, really. That kind of behavior ultimately detracts from their child's achievements. For some students, NYU is ideal. Same with UVA. Same with every other school mentioned in the thread.

IMO, it's insecure parents who are the problem. Not the schools. But maybe some schools invite this by over-marketing themselves, prioritizing low admit rates over applicant fit?
