Discrimination against Asians

"This past few months reading all these threads regarding the hate people have towards Asian is just unreal, and frankly very disappointing. It tells me that hardworking Asian will not be welcomed in this country."

Please do not despair AA families!
I know this is a troubled time in our country and racism against AAs has been on the uptick.

Our numbers are growing, the country changes whether or not the populace embraces it. Affirmative action is on the doorstep of being repealed.

Don't let a few lonely racist folks despair you. I'm not sure why they are posting here, but who cares? The future is Asian.

The changes made to TJ admissions policy were made as a result of very poor critical thinking.

Not enough black people at TJ - black people need our help - they don't test well enough to get in - attributed it to prepping raising test scores - ban testing

It's very simplistic thinking. Good intentions, poor implementation.

The changes aren't purposefully racist against AAs, however allowing AAs to be subject to collateral damage IS racist. It's no different from affirmative action. The intention to increase opporunities for Black people is good, but using race to respond to racial inequity...well it is illogical.

This thread isn't about TJ, it's about racism against AAs.

Many whites are so judgmental, arrogant and self righteous! Asian parents care their kid’s wellbeing as much as any other race. They may disagree with you that drilling in math is child abuse while drilling in sports is character building, that doesn’t mean they are worse parents. And outliers exist in all races.

I don't think they even have good intentions. It's all virtual signaling. Some of the advocacy people secretly said "while the iron is hot, make TJ white again..."

Unfortunately the whole process is racist and rigged, and the deck's been stacked from the beginning. How many Asians in FCPS leadership positions get to vote? How many Asians have been consulted on the best path forward. How many Asians are salaried admin and teachers at FCPS? How many Asian parents and students were actually listened to in order to understand the Asian American perspective? How much of this is white guilt trying to pass the blame onto one minority group in favor of others so that whitey can save face? Many white sheriffs and police chiefs in America have retired since George Floyd. How many white superintendents and prinicipals have followed suit?

FCPS: If it ain’t white, it ain’t right. If I can’t win, it must be rigged.

Show us the numbers to prove otherwise that the process was fair. And by the way, Asians were winning through hard work and studying but you, dear white person, decided to change the admission rules where neither of those two things matter anymore.

Oh, of course, by all means put the BLM sign on the lawn, that helps a lot. It impresses the domestic help when they come through the neighborhood.
Don't come on a thread about Asian american discrimination and lecture us on how good we have it.
It's reeks of colonialism. Remember those days?

To add on to this.

Anybody who is not Asian and is talking stupid only needs to look at the LA riots and what happened to Koreatown. The whites allowed Koreatown to burn because they forced the police to put a blockade between Beverly Hills/West Hollywood and Koreatown. The Rodney King beating and trial was a black-white issue but the white media made it out to seem that blacks left South Central to go after Koreans because of racial tension. Blacks weren't looking to stop at Koreatown for a free bite to eat and a new wardrobe - they were trying to get to Rodeo Drive but were prevented from doing so by the police, who were told to "stand back and stand by" so that blacks could get it out of their system. Koreans were collateral damage and many of these businesses were uninsured with life savings put into it in order to make enough to send their kids to a good college. After the riots, Koreans were vilified (guns on roofs) so white people could escape the blame. An entire community was destroyed but there was no FEMA or Kickstarter, etc; no Feed the World or Imagine. The Korean community pulled together and helped each other. in times of distress, white people like to scream for subsidies and emergency assistance and URM like to ask for some type of public welfare. Asians only try to suffer through this generation so the next one can prosper. When you speak of "rich" Asians, you're talking about a lot of blue collar types that work 14 hours a day and don't have extended family to lean on during hard times. Taking away merit based admissions to any competitive school is basically the only thing that Asians can definitively lean on. And this is earning a spot. not being given one.

Ain’t that the truth.

Without even getting into the TJ discrimination discussion, I would never willingly give the school system a blank check to use completely non-objective measures to decide my childrens' futures, because during my life, I've run into enough hypocrite-racists, stupid people with cute degrees, and people who just don't care (or care about the wrong things) to put my full faith into someone else's open-ended subjective judgement.

But yeah, discrimination is real. Yes, Asians or Easter Europeans are targets of discrimination. If a test can be gamed through prep, then it generally means that it has a built-in bias (people who are more familiar with the style of questions would be more likely to do well on it). Communities with a decent percentage of immigrants (the aforementioned Asians and Eastern Europeans) would be at a disadvantage. It's ironic that now that they've found a way to reverse-engineer the bias and level the playing field, now is when we have to do something to "fix the broken system." It looks a lot like moving goalposts.

Sigh. I think it's just going to have to play out. They will have to implement the new policy at TJ. Affirmative action will be repealed. We will see how it all works out.

Thank goodness AAs are a resilient bunch. Education is of utmost importance to Asian cultures and we will continue to focus on giving our children the best education possible.

In American society, access to privelege is filtered through the most selective schools and the current status quo makes me consider that white people are feeling threatened by asians beating them at their own game. Hence the changes. But time will tell.

Fighting!

Can you point to something specific here? This sounds like a Comet Pizza-style, Elders of Zion-type conspiracy theory.

Being penalized for being too successful, working too hard, and being too driven and thus outperforming other demographics is hard to accept. Especially, when it isn't framed as "you are too successful so we are going to give others a fighting chance" but rather "you create a toxic culture that must be tamped down." In most situations, this level of effort and success is celebrated and admired, but not educational opportunities when it comes to Asians. Again, I can understand their frustration.

This. Thank you.

I am Asian and my family lives a fugal life. We don't spend on luxuries and we don't spend time or money sending kids to after school academic tutoring/enrichment centers. We don't cheat or steal or break any laws. We have never expected handouts or helps from the governments. My kid works hard and she tested in with her own merits. This past few months reading all these threads regarding the hate people have towards Asian is just unreal, and frankly very disappointing. It tells me that hardworking Asian will not be welcomed in this country.

Well, I have read on this thread that “whites are the reason this country is so divided” and “Many whites are so judgmental, arrogant and self righteous!“ Maybe we should not draw grand conclusions about who hates whom. The internet — and DCUM in particular — is just a really divisive place.

If you are interested, you can watch the 10/8 school board session and get the specific.

Look at your television screen and name two people that are Asian that you know that have held leads in a show.

Look at firm/company/government institution and see if there are any Asians in the top management bracket.

Look at important political positions, various appointees in government, etc.

Then search the internet to see why it is.

People saying there is no discrimination towards Asians in this TJ debacle are crazy too.

The lottery itself is projected to significantly reduce the Asian percentage by 25 to 40 percentage points. 40! That is ethnic cleansing.

Why all the fuss about prepping? This is just one element. The Asians are coming in with 4.0 GPAs (the average is actually 3.96 and that means the vast majority are straight A students). They just might be just this: hard working individuals, in many cases gifted.

What if different families have different priorities? Unless you are filthy rich (Whites are the wealthiest people in this region/country by the way), you can only spend so much. Many families are sacrificing vacation, fancy cars, and other endeavors like sports, arts, and other expensive pursuits (like baseball games) for this. Who are you to place value on which is more rewarding or relevant for the kids' families' futures?

Our kids went to a prep center and took a mock test. They scored so high, the prep center said please go and keep doing what you have been doing. Khan academy. So they continue to work on problems on their own free time. Every time they get something right, there is a ding-ding-ding, which populates our house during the weekends. It is all free. The noises are annoying though.

If you want to help URMs, start early. By the time the kids are in 8th grade, a great divide has already developed. Which URM parent will want to send their kids unprepared compared to others? Even if there is an incredible remedial program, which family will want to put their kids through it, commuting hours a day, if there is uncertainty regarding whether the remedial program will work, whether their kids will continue to struggle all the way to college application time?

The whole lottery is a joke. No data. They are only going by anecdotes. No private firm or public institution would act upon such limited information. Only FCPS.

Because they think this will improve racial numbers at a school. Will it improve their lives? Are they certain? Or will it be sort of like...a lottery. A game of chance with their lives?

Also, for those who think that TJHSST is toxic, so they think it needs to be blown up. Just google "TJHSST" and "LinkedIn" or "CV" or "resume" together. You will see many kids, students, and professionals, working hard at amazing things to improve our society. This is actual data.

There are helicopter parents out there, who force the kids to do stuff. No denying that. With the lottery, how many will there be that applies just for the heck of it, without passion for STEM, without the academic aptitude? Who knows?

There still may be helicopter families there too, but more likely without the smarts and giftedness to persevere - because the cost to applying is so low (zero in fact).

Again, you may not end up changing the so-called culture at all. TJ may be even more populated with miserable kids; those who struggle at school + those with helicopter parents without the drive and aptitude.

+ 1,000,000,000

The toxicity of the TJ community has been abundantly on display, especially since the lottery proposal was announced.

Students admitted under a lottery system are more likely to be diverse and to display some humility, a quality sorely lacking at TJ today.

You like your serfs humble don’t you? Our hard work is of value only when we are working for you and are appropriately meek and deferential.

The future is multi-cultural. Asian supremacists will continue to be ostracized and countered.

You can say this to just about any racial group. Unless you are a troll, you are chasing a mirage.
