This is about preferences. Asian American parents are much, much more likely to prefer their children study math and science and attend brand-name colleges. These preferences may come from their home countries or from pressure from their parents or simply their tradition. It is certainly possible that children of other races do not have the same opportunities to go to cram schools, but it is definitely also true that their parents usually have different preferences.
To everyone who has pointed out that Asian Americans are underrepresented as executives, legislators, teachers, and community leaders, please consider whether their parents actively discouraged them from pursuing those fields. |
The toxicity of the TJ community has been abundantly on display, especially since the lottery proposal was announced. Students admitted under a lottery system are more likely to be diverse and to display some humility, a quality sorely lacking at TJ today. |
| I am not Asian, but I can certainly see the point. Being penalized for being too successful, working too hard, and being too driven and thus outperforming other demographics is hard to accept. Especially, when it isn't framed as "you are too successful so we are going to give others a fighting chance" but rather "you create a toxic culture that must be tamped down." In most situations, this level of effort and success is celebrated and admired, but not educational opportunities when it comes to Asians. Again, I can understand their frustration. |
Humility? Stop pointing your finger at nonwhite people. White people are the reason why the country is so divided and you have the balls to then tell other people how to live in your world? Have you read the news lately hon? It's not your world anymore. You wouldn't give an inch on BLM before George Floyd and you lost a mile. You're used to Asians being your invisible friend but you turned the younger, more educated ones into activists - and guess what? They've studied and gone to better schools than you and your kids so they're smarter than you. Learn from your mistakes and stick a fork in it because the post-colonial Eurocentric world is done. |
Again, see how gracefully you handle a situation when you don't get exactly what you want. I hope dashing off that diatribe made you feel better for a moment, but the School Board is going to address the toxic culture you created within FCPS and at TJ. |
This is quite graceful. Didn't have to use dogs, firehoses, or stand your ground to back up my arguments because you no longer matter, Karen. |
This. Thank you. |
I cant speak for other cultures, but for Mainland Chinese, there is a culture against operating businesses since the merchant class is viewed as being among the lowest rung on the social ladder. Being a government official have traditionally been among the most revered profession, but the instability of China politics, especially through the cultural revolution and Xi's efforts against his political enemies, have turned off a lot of people to being engaged in politics. Another critical factor is lack of religious belief, with widespread athiesm among Chinese population. Forces of past and present have resulted in a near perfect storm where the rationality of science and math is attractive as means to a stable future in the technical field - like the trades and craftsmen of old, a class just below the government officials. |
That's because you are a racist who defines diversity based on skin color. It's ironic you would accuse Asians of lacking humility. |
I am Asian and my family lives a fugal life. We don't spend on luxuries and we don't spend time or money sending kids to after school academic tutoring/enrichment centers. We don't cheat or steal or break any laws. We have never expected handouts or helps from the governments. My kid works hard and she tested in with her own merits. This past few months reading all these threads regarding the hate people have towards Asian is just unreal, and frankly very disappointing. It tells me that hardworking Asian will not be welcomed in this country. |
I do not send kids to TJ. However, I have worked with many kids from TJ both as high school students, college students, and even PhD students from the Ivies and MIT. They are far more diverse, considerate, and intelligent than you are. Your assumption that lottery will bring in more diversity and humility is offensive. |
True, this can happen mostly because Asian Americans are still a small minority and as a group tend not to fight back. Their historic suffering doesn’t come into many’s mind, and their success is deemed as a privilege. |
|
"How utterly wretched, then, must be the lives of the 90% of the Asian kids who don’t end up at a competitive magnet school. You should probably all just end it now because the odds were stacked so heavily against you and now it’s going to be even worse. No one else has ever had to suffer like you."
Umm, why are you posting here? What's the point other than to troll? What's it to you whether or not AA feel they are discriminated against? You have nothing else to do but read a thread by and for AAs? |
