Discrimination against Asians

"You are basically paying for a high score."

Perhaps to some degree quality tutoring can lift a score, but the candidate still has to have the inetlligence and work ethic to make use of the tutoring. There are many priveleged kids who have no interest in putting in the effort. It's more than just economics.

The students who are unable to pay for prep courses should receive a basic test, the preppers receive a modified test based on the number of prep hours paid for by their parents. Or better yet, eliminate the useless test."

Can you explain to me which tests are acceptable to prep for and which tests are not? MCAT, SAT, LSAT? Med boards, Bar exam, CPA? Oxford and Cambridge have math specific entrance exams?
Should all test prep be banned? How about interview prep for jobs or college admissions - any prep allowed for that?
I'm sincerely asking, I don't understand why prepping is seen as bad.
Is it an economic issue? There are many parents of all colors who scrimp and save to pay for test prep. There are non profits offering free tutoring. The schools should offer free tutoring to any student who wants to prep. Parents with disposable income of course have it easier, they can afford test prep.
Outside of the economic issues, parents have to be willing to prioritize schooling to their children. I'm not sure how to equalize that.

Yes, bingo, it is an economic issue. The free prep courses provided aren’t of the same caliber as the expensive paid for prep courses, no comparison. You are basically paying for a high score. Not everyone is able to scrimp and save for a prep course, it’s just not economically feasible for many.

So move from your gated homes which guarantees you go to a better school. Asian Americans spending thousands to prep to get into a good high school in order to get into a better college is nothing compared to the millions you paid to go to a mostly white neighborhood school; and then claim you have no skin in the game when it comes to TJ admissions. We don't have those same legacy spots that go to your kids, nor do we get free boosts from daddy when it comes to networking and connections in fields such as law and business.

Which most Asians lack.

"Hey, if people, black, white, pink, green, want to pretend that prep courses don’t drastically help improve scores, go ahead. You are delusional."

They most certainly do which is why parents pay for it. However, the KID HAS TO BE WILLING TO DO THE WORK.

Isn't it an issue of intelligence and priorities?

So tired of white people speaking for the poor Black oppressed. I think Black people are capable and able to self determine what they need as individuals and don't need white people virtue signaling on their behalf.
Oh, of course, by all means put the BLM sign on the lawn, that helps a lot. It impresses the domestic help when they come through the neighborhood.
Don't come on a thread about Asian american discrimination and lecture us on how good we have it.
It's reeks of colonialism. Remember those days?

They conveniently forget unless a certain group starts to riot and loot and burn down cities.

To add on to this.

Anybody who is not Asian and is talking stupid only needs to look at the LA riots and what happened to Koreatown. The whites allowed Koreatown to burn because they forced the police to put a blockade between Beverly Hills/West Hollywood and Koreatown. The Rodney King beating and trial was a black-white issue but the white media made it out to seem that blacks left South Central to go after Koreans because of racial tension. Blacks weren't looking to stop at Koreatown for a free bite to eat and a new wardrobe - they were trying to get to Rodeo Drive but were prevented from doing so by the police, who were told to "stand back and stand by" so that blacks could get it out of their system. Koreans were collateral damage and many of these businesses were uninsured with life savings put into it in order to make enough to send their kids to a good college. After the riots, Koreans were vilified (guns on roofs) so white people could escape the blame. An entire community was destroyed but there was no FEMA or Kickstarter, etc; no Feed the World or Imagine. The Korean community pulled together and helped each other. in times of distress, white people like to scream for subsidies and emergency assistance and URM like to ask for some type of public welfare. Asians only try to suffer through this generation so the next one can prosper. When you speak of "rich" Asians, you're talking about a lot of blue collar types that work 14 hours a day and don't have extended family to lean on during hard times. Taking away merit based admissions to any competitive school is basically the only thing that Asians can definitively lean on. And this is earning a spot. not being given one.

My husband’s family moved to VA after LA riots because they lost their store and needed to find jobs. my husband and his brother had to work after school everyday. His father passed away because of stress from losing all his money and store due to LA riots.

I remember those riots and lived on the east coast at the time - I had no idea this is what happened. Thank you for sharing this information.
I think history has shown the Asian americans need to band together. Historically we have not because we are a disparate group. But I think the younger generation of Asian americans know to self advocate and we are a sizable minority and no longer have to keep our heads down and settle.
The current climate in the US is not good for Asian americans. People blame Trump for calling the virus the China virus, but I'll take that over Biden hanging onto affirmative action.
There is more and more Asian representation in higher levels of society. This is OUR COUNTRY and we do not have to tolerate racism.

Thanks for this background on the LA riots. I was fairly young when this occurred. Had wondered why the LA Korean-American community got stuck in the middle. This puts it into better perspective.

People saying there is no discrimination towards Asians are crazy.

Look at your television screen and name two people that are Asian that you know that have held leads in a show.

Look at firm/company/government institution and see if there are any Asians in the top management bracket.

Look at important political positions, various appointees in government, etc.

Then search the internet to see why it is.

People saying there is no discrimination towards Asians in this TJ debacle are crazy too.

The lottery itself is projected to significantly reduce the Asian percentage by 25 to 40 percentage points. 40! That is ethnic cleansing.

Why all the fuss about prepping? This is just one element. The Asians are coming in with 4.0 GPAs (the average is actually 3.96 and that means the vast majority are straight A students). They just might be just this: hard working individuals, in many cases gifted.

What if different families have different priorities? Unless you are filthy rich (Whites are the wealthiest people in this region/country by the way), you can only spend so much. Many families are sacrificing vacation, fancy cars, and other endeavors like sports, arts, and other expensive pursuits (like baseball games) for this. Who are you to place value on which is more rewarding or relevant for the kids' families' futures?

Our kids went to a prep center and took a mock test. They scored so high, the prep center said please go and keep doing what you have been doing. Khan academy. So they continue to work on problems on their own free time. Every time they get something right, there is a ding-ding-ding, which populates our house during the weekends. It is all free. The noises are annoying though.

If you want to help URMs, start early. By the time the kids are in 8th grade, a great divide has already developed. Which URM parent will want to send their kids unprepared compared to others? Even if there is an incredible remedial program, which family will want to put their kids through it, commuting hours a day, if there is uncertainty regarding whether the remedial program will work, whether their kids will continue to struggle all the way to college application time?

The whole lottery is a joke. No data. They are only going by anecdotes. No private firm or public institution would act upon such limited information. Only FCPS.

Because they think this will improve racial numbers at a school. Will it improve their lives? Are they certain? Or will it be sort of like...a lottery. A game of chance with their lives?

Also, for those who think that TJHSST is toxic, so they think it needs to be blown up. Just google "TJHSST" and "LinkedIn" or "CV" or "resume" together. You will see many kids, students, and professionals, working hard at amazing things to improve our society. This is actual data.

There are helicopter parents out there, who force the kids to do stuff. No denying that. With the lottery, how many will there be that applies just for the heck of it, without passion for STEM, without the academic aptitude? Who knows?

There still may be helicopter families there too, but more likely without the smarts and giftedness to persevere - because the cost to applying is so low (zero in fact).

Again, you may not end up changing the so-called culture at all. TJ may be even more populated with miserable kids; those who struggle at school + those with helicopter parents without the drive and aptitude.

There really needs to be an Asian History month in American schools to dispel the myths and stereotypes that white America has created about Asians. Asians have been discriminated against since the first Chinese were used as slave labor to build the railroads. Yellow Peril laws such as the Chinese Exclusion Act and the Gentleman's Agreement. Japanese business and property being looted by whites while being interred in concentration camps. The strategy of white Americans and Europeans to fight their wars in Asia, Africa, and South America. The K-town riots. The fact that basically the only cop to be convicted of killing a black or brown person in a sensationalized story was a Hong Kong Chinese immigrant rookie cop who was scared (not racist) and shot at open space not at someone. The fact that everyone knows what the mentally challenged (but not helped) Korean kid who shot up Virginia Tech looks like because they constantly showed a headshot but no one knows what the Columbine killers look like because they always show those blurry security cam trench coat pictures. I'm sure there are many more stories that I am ignorant of.

How utterly wretched, then, must be the lives of the 90% of the Asian kids who don’t end up at a competitive magnet school. You should probably all just end it now because the odds were stacked so heavily against you and now it’s going to be even worse. No one else has ever had to suffer like you.
