I am so sick of being fat but obviously not enough to actually follow through on a diet. Every morning I am motivated only to fall off the wagon midday. Some days, I am good in the beginning of the weeknbut fail over the weekend.
What are your tips for getting your diet jumpstarted and sticking to it? I want to, no need to lose 40 pounds at least! |
| It’s rough but if I can cut sugar, white carbs, dairy and alcohol for a week....I can stick with it. |
| You have to cut out sugar and simple carbs that process through quickly. In order to stay satisfied I need to eat protein at every meal, with lots of water or tea, and vegetables. |

Don't try to do too much at once, OP. Give up sugar. Once you feel confident with that, give up white carbs (flour -- bread, bagels, etc. white rice, the like). Try to eat more protein, or when you get the nibbles ask if you are thirsty instead, and have a glass of water.
Don't rush into an exercise program. 90% of your weight is eating. You should exercise, because it will make you feel great, but don't push it thinking you can burn off those calories from the treat you just ate (it is really hard to do that). Get a buddy to support you and cheer you on. Allow yourself to feel proud for not having any sugar today. Or just this morning! Avoid the snack tables or vending machines or whatever it is that tempts you. If you fall off the wagon at midday ... hop right back on and don't let yourself get discouraged. We ALL fall off the wagon and eat that mini peanutbutter cup sometimes. Or maybe 10 of them. You know, as one is wont to do the days before her period. Know that you can do this!! |

The ONLY thing that has ever worked for me was jumping straight in and going Keto. I've been on every diet known to man, including 20 years as a weight watchers member, and could never stop the yo-yo.
I remember agreeing to "try" the keto diet for 2 weeks after a friend had great success. In the back of my mind, I could never give up sugar forever. What about pumpkin donuts? What about bread? I couldn't imagine my life never having another bite of pasta. Fast forward 6 months. I've lost over 50 pounds (190 to 137), went from a tight 14 to a loose 6, I sleep better, my focus is back and my anxiety is gone. I've had a few "cheats" here and there - a few bites of wedding cake, a small portion of pasta when we went to Italy on vacation, and some fancy chocolates one time. Eating a lot of fat made all the difference for me. When I was doing a calories in/calories out diet, I'd let myself have just "one" oreo and track the calories. But the sugar. It roped me in every time and suddenly that one oreo became the whole sleeve. I am so much more in control now that I simply just don't have those things. Not saying this is the magic bullet for everyone. But, OP, commit to doing SOMETHING and sticking to it for 2 weeks. Here's what I've found... in 6 months my life has changed dramatically and for the better. I am less snappy with my kids, I don't have to take a nap every weekend day, and I'm truly proud of my effort - stretch marks and loose belly flab and all. I have NO DOUBT that if I'd kept on how I was going I'd easily have been over 200lbs and in bigger clothes. The time is going to pass whether or not you change your lifestyle. Think 98 days til New Years - think how far along your weight loss you could be by then if you start today. You've got this! |

How do you recommend someone start Keto? |
I'm the PP. I just literally texted with a friend and jumped in the next day. I would definitely steer anyone to the Keto reddit page... awesome FAQ section and great resources on the forum. The first two weeks were pretty rough for me, but by week 3 I was totally cruising. Definitely read up on the keto flu and how to avoid it (sodium, magnesium, potassium). After the first two weeks, I was feeling so much better already. Lost 11 pounds my first month which kept me going. Keep it simple the first week. Bacon/sausage and eggs for breakfast. Salad with non-starchy veggies and some sort of protein with ranch/caesar/blue cheese for lunch. Almonds and string cheese for snack if you need it. Big steak with butter and broccoli or spinach for dinner. Salt liberally. Drink a crap ton of water. Mix a vodka and soda if you like

| A warning about keto—it’s not for everyone! The Pp had great success (congrats!) but google “keto side effects” before you jump in. |
Google "ibuprofen side effects" Google "Air freshener side effects" Google lysol side effects literally everything impacts SOMEONE.

| Just a note re: 9:22, it wasn't me, the Keto poster, but it's true... and I feel like I was pretty clear that it's not sustainable for everyone. Just like there are plenty of people who lose weight and are lifetime members of Weight Watchers, and it didn't work for me. Honestly, I was addicted to sugar and had to break the cycle. It's been relatively painless (I have had a few days where I really wanted to order Chinese food but resisted). I was very wary after reading some articles, but honestly, MDs have been pushing low fat, lots of whole grain diets for 50 years now and ... we are literally dying from diabetes and obesity. Fat doesn't make you fat. I'm eating much closer to what my grandparents did (cooking with oil, butter, etc, lots of veg) than the WW diet I was following with processed EVERYTHING. |

I am also someone who lacks will power. I am not one who can do keto, give up sugars, etc. I am everything but smaller quantities and I am losing weight. It's not coming off fast like other diets, but I can do it because I am not depriving myself of foods I like. I aim to eat half of what is on my plate but what has really helped me is that I load up on well prepared, flavorful vegetables and eat all of those. They fill me up.

+1 But I had to do this gradually, and have to really stick to it otherwise, I'll have a really huge craving and relapse. It helped shrink my stomach and then I naturally got full with smaller quantities of food. Start with small goals, don't compare your weight loss with others, it is a marathon and you need something that you can keep up with long term even after your weight loss. Do an activity that will work for you, start with a 5-10 minute activity, once you build up stamina, add 5-10 minutes more. |
| I get it OP, I'm the same way. You just have to keep trying to find something that works for you, or accept being fat. There's no other choices. I found doing intermittent fasting (eating between 12pm and 8pm) works best for me. Other PPs find keto has worked. You just have to keep trying. |
| If you stick to a ketogenic diet for 5-6 days, you will lose the need for willpower. You will lose carb and sugar cravings. You lose so much water weight in the first week that you will feel very motivated to continue. And if you feel like eating a ton, go ahead and have a huge plate of bacon and eggs. Eat all the nuts you want. You won't feel hunger anymore and you'll have more energy. The trick is to REALLY be in ketosis though. You have to think you're consuming literally zero carbs and you'll be consuming under 30g which is enough to push you into ketosis. |
