Maybe his DNA matched the DNA found at other crime scenes. Who knows.

Let's leave the family of Matthews out of this. They didn't do anything. If a relative of yours did something awful, would you want your name dragged through the media?

Who are you, my mother?

No, just someone who believe in treating others how I would want to be treated.

If a family member of mine did something awful, and I had absolutely nothing to do with it, I'd hope people would respect my privacy and not unfairly drag me in.

No one is dragging the family in! No one is accusing them of anything. We are just reporting FACTS that will give all the curious people reading this thread some solace that there is PROGRESS in getting JM to turn himself in so that we learn more about what happened to HG. Some of us have past and future ties to UVA and are concerned about the safety of women in C-ville and beyond.

Would they have her DNA by now to have discovered it on his clothes?

Matthew is not acting like an innocent person, but I don't understand why, if he was involved in her disappearance or death at all, he would voluntarily go to the police, talk to a lawyer, and leave. You'd think he would either run for the hills or turn himself in. What he actually did do makes no sense.

My gut tells me this may be like the girl who died in McLean last year -- I think he did take her intending to have sex with her, how much she protested who knows, in her state, and maybe something went wrong (drug overdose perhaps?), and he dumped the body.

+1 I have been thinking this also

Pp, were you not aware that all black men are drug dealers?

I am not aware that all black men are drug dealers. However, I am aware that there are a lot of paranoid idiots out there. If JM is cleared in this case, I hope he subpoenas and sues all you idiots for slander.

Good lord people, some of you are like some phony infomercial detective straight from a Simpson's episode.

Remember Richard Jewel and the Atlanta Olympic bombings? He was there but then became a suspect. Eventually cleared.

If this guy has nothing to hide, why did he flee Charlottesville at high speed?

Because when you are black and a white girl is missing and the police know you were one of the last people to see her, you can see the writing on the wall?

I'm not saying he is innocent, but certainly in this country many innocent black men have been blamed for crimes against white women they had nothing to do with.

I don't really understand why, if he were guilty, he would have hung around for so long after and even voluntarily shown up at the police station.

The police chief does seem very emotionally involved and lacking emotional detachment in a way that does not always go hand in hand with careful and methodical police work.

Even with all of this said, to me the most likely explanation is that the suspect with the dreds was involved somehow just because he was the last one to see her and he DID flee. I hope this story takes a weird turn and she is found alive and healthy, maybe just in a like fugue state or disoriented.

Do you always live in an alternate reality? They wouldn't charge them unless they had evidence she was in the car with him.

If he were a white male the police chief and community would be just as upset. Violence against women by men is out of control all over this planet.

Waaaay confused. Just a few posts up someone says only his DNA was found in the car?

That would make sense given what we know so far...

As I understand it,2 members of his family were in the car with JM when he sped away from police. Does anyone know if those family members have been located?

I worked for Camblos when he was the Commonwealth's Atty. This is going to be interesting if he is the defense atty. Camblos is not a liberal-hearted guy but I'm sure he'll do everything he can if he's paid to represent him. Hard for me to picture him as this guy's defense atty.

I think PP was just guessing that they have some sort of DNA evidence - I don't think anyone really knows at this point

They may just have a witness who saw them get in JM's car. That alone would be enough probably cause to show that he took her somewhere and we can draw the inference that it was somewhere she didn't want to go b/c she hasn't come back and there is plenty of evidence that she intended to be at school, living in her apartment and connecting up with her friends. All they need for the abduction charge is someone seeing HG in JM's car.

I meant "probable cause" -- not "probably"

that is certainly possible

He has been retained to represent JM or JM's family?
