Here is an article with a statement from Hannah's family:

You miss the point. It's not about thinking that the president can protect all the kids. It's about creating an environment in which safety and taking care of one another is most important. It's about creating an environment where coaches are held accountable. It's about creating an environment where safety is more important than sports or academics. You all are missing the point. |
Any family with a missing student is going to praise the police in the area and the University while they are searching. They have to. It's their only hope. But the real story will come out after this is all over with. |
To generalize based on my experience at UVa, Charlottesville seems like a cutesy little town, and students develop a false sense of security walking around the areas past the Corner, where non-students hang out. Obviously drinking is a factor in bad judgment. I used to walk home from the library at 2 am by myself to my apt, thinking a lit cigarette would protect me from an attacker. I didn't feel unsafe, but I'm sure girls there now would feel scared after these incidents.
I don't know any of the specifics in this case, and I don't question anything she did or didn't do, just want her home safe. My daughter knows she can call me from anywhere to come get her, and to never leave her friends or be alone at night. She has a credit card and always has cash on her and an extra phone battery. When she goes to college, I'm sure I will worry no matter how prepared she is. For now, I just hope they find Hannah, and if someone was involved in her disappearance I hope they are brought to justice. |
I agree those things are all important and I actually believe Theresa Sullivan has done more than any of her predecessors to advance those goals. But the bottom line is: these kids think they are invincible. They do dumb stuff. There are too many predators in the Central VA area that have literally gotten away with murder, that it has emboldened others to murder as well, IMO at least. Education about personal safety is key, but who knows what was going through Morgan's or Hannah's minds on the nights they disappeared? I know I did really dumb stuff as a college student. The difference is there wasn't a predator at hand, ready to take advantage. |
Morgan Harrington's mother says it better than I ever could:

I am just so sad that a mother needs to be good at statements like this. |
Yeah ... as a UVA grad ... there is a lot of drunk middle of the night wandering through Charlottesville that goes on. It's not like other campuses where all the partying and whatnot is confined to a small area, and your walk home is through a well lit and well patrolled small campus. Plus the frat scene is crazy. I have never been surprised that there at lot of rapes there and I'm not surprised that women are targeted by predators. It's just not a safe environment. I wouldn't want my daughters to go to UVA for that reason. |
If you are a drunk college student walking alone at night you are at risk. I think serial killers stalk college towns because drunk students are so vulnerable. Girls especially, but guys also. I remember the story of Brian Shaffer a medical student in 2006 from Ohio State that went missing after leaving a bar. Tell your college students not to drink. Drunk people make dumb decisions like wandering home alone at night. I sure hope they find this girl. |
A possible sighting of the suspect in Morgan Harrington's murder at Washington and Lee:

Not good that this guy surfaces within days of another girl going missing at UVA. |
Morgan Harrington's mom said 13 girls are missing from the same area near UVA. Scary. |

Can you please post the article. Gosh I think of all the nights I walked or rode a bike home drunk in college. This poor girl's family. |
