Nope. Lets find out more about this man and get him arrested, fined and throw him in the jail for a few days.

I mean...if you’re not okay with police violence against the mentally ill, that should extend to any race.

So White supremacy, entitlement, racism and Anti-Asian bias is now being called Autism? Wow, we had an Autistic ex-POTUS in TRUMP then.

So it was not childhood abuse from his parents that made Trump the ahole that he is, but his genetic flaw that made him autistic and thus an ahole? Thank you for explaining it to us.

that’s relevant in what way?

Are you kidding?

No, I’m not. I don’t know what point they are trying to make. Having meltdowns when a lot of unexpected/inappropriate things happen is something that is a challenge for a lot of people with autism, especially in the moderate to severe category. That can include swearing, name calling, etc.

Original poster here. My point is that autism might be a reason but not an excuse. If this was the F word it would be one thing but racist slurs? No. That stuff doesn’t slip out because of lack of social awareness. It shouldn’t be there in the first place.

Yes it can slip out as a result of autism if a person is melting down. All sorts of things can happen.

Well, if he cannot function in society then maybe some guardian or parent can step up and pay the bill. He did assault the woman. But, if he was any other color but White, people would have called him a conniving a-hole. Now, we think that this snowflake has Autism. Nice try, trolls. He can pay the bill and apologize or he can get canceled.

yeah cancel an autistic man having a meltdown - great job hope you feel satisfied.

if you actually cared you’d draw a line between autism and risk of police violence (worse for black people) but you’re much more interested in canceling.

whoosh -- over head

+1

It can happen.

Yes, people with autism have uneven abilities. So he could get to a restaurant and forget to pay, or get overwhemled and leave, or maybe even decide not to pay, and not be able to cope with the outcome “normally.”

He can even listen to right wing media and think an Asian person touching him will infect him with covid.

let's be specific.. a white man.

If he is clueless about these things then he's impaired enough for his family members to make sure he is not out on his own. He might do something like not follow a cop's direction, runaway thinking to the cop has cooties or something and get shot.

...or he should be in a supervised living situation. But yeah-if you are impaired enough to not be accountable for your actions (for whatever reason), you are impaired enough to have your activities restricted.

It’s not that he shouldn’t be held accountable. It’s that the social media machine needs to calm down and realize this isn’t some scenario where a white supremacist set out to steal from and target an Asian person.

how do you know he is not a white supremacist?

Because he appears moderate-severely autistic to me. He looks confused and overwhelmed, and like he's having trouble verbalizing. The media is playing this like it's some Richard Spence wannabe who set out to dine and ditch and attack and Asian old lady.

nothing went over my head. it’s atrocious to argue that an autistic or mentally ill white person should be mistreated because black autistic or mentally ill people are mistreated. no actual advocate would ever make that argument.

That rule only applies to mental health professionals, and in the era of Trump there was hot debate among members of that profession whether the duty to warn outweighed the Goldwater Rule when raging mental health issues were on such full and florid display on a daily basis for all the world to see.

Diagnosing this guy from a few seconds of video is very troubling. I don’t see autism, I see azzhole.

For those who see autism - is it typical for autistic people to curse and resort to racial verbal attacks - is that a hallmark of the disorder like it is for Tourette’s?

I see very clear signs of autism. The cursing/slurs are not on tape. But certainly that could be part of an autistic meltdown. I actually live in fear of the day my son will do something like that. He’s done milder versions already.

A $70 theft is probably a misdemeanor, so if he’s a first time offender, it would not be considered a serious crime. Assault is more serious, especially when paired with theft, so he’ll be in some trouble. The racial slurs possibly elevate simple assault to a hate crime, which takes the whole incident to the next level.

Maybe he has autism, maybe he doesn’t. Autism doesn’t make a person racist, but an autistic person might mimic racist things they’ve heard without fully understanding the impact of those words. If he has HFA, it wouldn’t mean that he doesn’t know he has to pay for food in restaurants, but it likely would mean that if he forgot to pay and walked out, then was confronted by the owner following him, raising her voice, obviously being upset with him, blocking the sidewalk, he probably panicked because the interaction didn’t follow a script that he was prepared for. He would know how to pay, but not what to do if he’s already left without paying and now someone is mad at him. An autistic person might not be able to stay calm and think through how they should handle the situation. They just go into fight or flight mode and aren’t really rational again until they’re removed from the situation.

The police need to investigate and determine what happened. Whether the suspect has autism or not, assault is not okay and possible hate crimes against the Asian community should be taken seriously.

If the Asian restaurant owners could not produce video footage showing anything beyond the fellow trying to give verbal commands to his phone to report an emergency, then it didn't happen. They're a restaurant. Do they really not have security cameras?

We are expected to take them at their word when it involves very serious charges against a young person who does not appear to be violent in any way on the video footage? And the media bought it because it fits so well into the race card rhetoric?

Once again, the media goes out of its way to ruin someone's life on the flimsiest of excuses, with zero evidence.

It's obvious from the footage the young man looks alarmed and confused.

Why would a restaurant owner risk being called out for $70? You are taking the video as truth of what happened, thinking the white guy has autism, but you won't take the word of an Asian business owner and her son?

I view it as mocking;he was being sarcastic to them.
