Maybe he has autism, maybe he doesn’t. Autism doesn’t make a person racist, but an autistic person might mimic racist things they’ve heard without fully understanding the impact of those words. If he has HFA, it wouldn’t mean that he doesn’t know he has to pay for food in restaurants, but it likely would mean that if he forgot to pay and walked out, then was confronted by the owner following him, raising her voice, obviously being upset with him, blocking the sidewalk, he probably panicked because the interaction didn’t follow a script that he was prepared for. He would know how to pay, but not what to do if he’s already left without paying and now someone is mad at him. An autistic person might not be able to stay calm and think through how they should handle the situation. They just go into fight or flight mode and aren’t really rational again until they’re removed from the situation.

The police need to investigate and determine what happened. Whether the suspect has autism or not, assault is not okay and possible hate crimes against the Asian community should be taken seriously.[/quote]
