2021-22 calendar

9/8 is ridiculously late to start.

Why we’re still pondering an after Labor Day start boggles the mind. I’d be all for an 8/16 or 8/23 start with a last day of end of May and other days off throughout the calendar year.
There’s just more benefits:

-Less summer slide
- More frequent breaks which is helpful to both students and teachers
- More time for teaching planning in the year.

Heck, at this point I’d be okay with a half day each month to allow teachers to better plan and provide support to students.

I don’t think that is a serious proposal. I’d be shocked if they did that, especially with Labor Day so late

I love having labor day for family time.

You still get the 3-day weekend regardless of when school starts.

It’ll actually be a 4-day weekend this year because of the Jewish holiday.

Thanks for this, super helpful! We booked our vacation already (beach rentals are filling up fast!) banking on MCPS not starting school before August 30. I bet with Rosh Hashanah being the day after Labor Day, and Labor Day being pretty late, that they will start on August 30th.

+1

Thank you for posting this. Just made plans for that last weekend in August. Looks like there is little chance schools will start before Aug 30th, so it should be good.

Exactly. And HS students in AP classes get more prep time.

As a teacher and parent I prefer to start before Labor Day. More instructional days before AP testing, and by the time Memorial Day rolls around, the kids are wiped. Hard to sustain their focus.

A calendar shift that doesn’t actually change the length of summer break will not impact summer slide. Similarly, no matter what the end date is, last two weeks are fluff.

In recent years, the Board of Education has identified an educational and operational interest to not conduct instruction on certain dates where student and staff attendance may be significantly impacted. In the 2021–2022 school year, these dates are identified as:
• September 7, 2021
• September 16, 2021
• November 4, 2021
• February 1, 2022
• May 3, 2022

Next Steps

• March 9, 2021 – Present calendar scenarios to BOE for feedback

• March 10–March 19, 2021- Solicit and receive feedback from public comment and MCPS stakeholders

• March 23, 2021 – Present 2021-2022 Instructional School Year Calendar to BOE for action

It’s pretty funny that they present 3 scenarios and 2 start on Aug. 30 and the other Sep. 8.

I actually like a Aug. 30 start but it’s very unsubtle that they are promoting it as well.

AP exams are in May. Would kids be studying for AP exams during Labor day?
