Just watched the policy management committee meeting, and they decided to send 2 draft calendars to the full board for discussion at their March 9th meeting. As best I could tell, they asked that one scenario have the first day of school as August 30th and the last day of school as June 15th; the other scenario would have the first day of school as Sept. 8th and the last day of school as June 22nd. They asked that both scenarios have winter break from Dec. 23rd through Jan. 2nd, and spring break from Apr. 9th - 18th. The full board may make alternate suggestions.
After the board meeting there would be a period of public comment before the final decision would be voted on on March 23rd. |
Thank you for sharing this! Sounds like no major changes in the works, just a decision on whether to start before or after Labor Day. |
They also proposed keeping the parent-teacher conference early release days the days before Thanksgiving rather than on Veterans Day. |
I'm betting on the before-Labor Day start, if only as a "sure, we had to go ahead and open, but YOU DON'T OWN US!" poke in the eye to Hogan. |
This is exactly the type of petty BS that they would do |
Agreed. This is correct. |
I'm betting on the before-Labor Day start, if only because no one wants school to be in session as late as June 22nd. |
I would rather start later, tbh. A final trip to the beach before school starts is always so much fun, and prices really do plummet the first week in Sept. But this should be the lowest priority reason, I will grant that |
If we're making that kind of argument, I'd prefer a much earlier start, because European travel is cheaper if you can go before mid-June! We can only afford to travel every few years, and we had to cancel our last big trip in 2020. But hopefully they'll make the decision based on what's best for our kids' education, not our travel budgets (or Hogan's Ocean City developer buddies). |
Sure. I totally agree. It would be great if they finally considered the kid's education in their decision making process. But I'm not sure starting 8/30 or 9/8 really has that much of an impact, does it? |
An earlier start is better for kids taking AP exams. Otherwise, I’m not sure there’s a huge educational benefit in a normal year. This year, it might be worth an earlier start since the kids will have been out of school so much of ‘20 & ‘21. |
For sure. In fact, i wish they extend this current academic year by a few weeks |
| I wonder if they won't opt for a later start (after Labor Day) because the Jewish holidays are very early this year - Rosh Hashana is on Labor Day. |
I don't really see why that would make a difference. If they don’t have school on the Jewish holidays, there wouldn’t be school on 9/7 or 9/16, whether they first start on 8/23 or 9/8. If they start on 8/23, there are two full weeks of school, then a 3-day week, off for Labor Day and Rosh HaShana in week 3, then a 4 day week, off for Yom Kippur, in week 4. If they start after Labor Day, they’re off Monday-Tuesday of the first week and Thursday of the second week. I feel like it makes more sense to get routines in place by having two full weeks to start the year. |
