I don't really see why that would make a difference. If they don’t have school on the Jewish holidays, there wouldn’t be school on 9/7 or 9/16, whether they first start on 8/23 or 9/8.

If they start on 8/23, there are two full weeks of school, then a 3-day week, off for Labor Day and Rosh HaShana in week 3, then a 4 day week, off for Yom Kippur, in week 4.

If they start after Labor Day, they’re off Monday-Tuesday of the first week and Thursday of the second week.

I feel like it makes more sense to get routines in place by having two full weeks to start the year.

Oh, sorry, just saw that it would be 8/30, not 8/23. I still think it’s better to start with a full week.

I see that Yom skipping is mid-week.

Trying to plan a short getaway with family for Aug/Sept.

Any thoughts on what days MCPS will be closed for the Jewish holidays in Fall 2021?

2021–2022 School Year Calendar Parameters

Other Days of Operational Closure

In recent years, the Board of Education has identified an educational and operational
interest to not conduct instruction on certain dates where student and staff
attendance may be significantly impacted. In the 2021–2022 school year, these
dates are identified as:

• September 7, 2021
• September 16, 2021
• November 4, 2021
• February 1, 2022
• May 3, 2022

Most likely 9/7 and 9/16. Since 9/6 is Labor Day, Rosh HaShana makes a 4-day weekend (assuming school starts before then.) Yom Kippur should be just the Thursday off, so not helpful unless you want to skip school on Friday.

When will the BOE post a draft calendar? Didn’t they say they would finalize the calendar by mid-month?

Thank you for this! Makes sense.

Not against skipping school, but trying to minimize the amount of days my kid misses.

At the very least, the need to announce when school is starting.

It’s March! August is in five months. It is reasonable for parents and teachers to plan for things/vacations 6 months ahead.

There is a BOE meeting on March 9th. The agenda hasn't been posted yet, but this should be one of the items. They should finalize it by the next meeting, March 23rd.

Scroll down for the proposed calendars, to be discussed at the 3/9 BOE meeting.

Thanks for this, super helpful! We booked our vacation already (beach rentals are filling up fast!) banking on MCPS not starting school before August 30. I bet with Rosh Hashanah being the day after Labor Day, and Labor Day being pretty late, that they will start on August 30th.

Those were the proposed calendars to be discussed at the 2/25 policy management committee meeting. At that meeting, the committee made a few changes and requested that two draft calendars be sent to the full board for discussion on 3/9. One draft starting 8/30, the other on 9/8.
