+1. I hope public school students have a good distance learning experience, and that the schools are able to open in person. Our enjoyment of private school is not predicated upon the misery of public school students. I wonder if OP can say the same? Doesn’t matter though. Even though OP is a jerk, their kids deserve a good education, so I will continue to keep my fingers crossed for the public school system. |
All of this. I want all the kids to have a good experience, to be safe, and to be in person if possible. I want our friends and neighbors to do well. I want to be able to move my kid back to public in a couple years without worrying about placement issues because of lost educational time in the public classrooms. Laughing at anybody in this situation is awful. If you have anger and fear about the choices you had to make, direct that at your government (all levels) which has repeatedly failed to manage this pandemic and failed to prioritize kids. |
OP’s tone was rude, but this is the attitude that begets posts like hers in the first place. So congrats on being one of the chosen few rich and/or lucky enough to have secured a spot in your superior institution. Though my kids are doing well enough with DL, I admit I am jealous of the private school kids who I have watched skipping off to school every day since September. You would be, too, so maybe just shut your trap for a while. Please try to remember how incredibly fortunate your kids are to be able to enjoy a relatively uninterrupted educational experience this year. There are scores and scores of children nationwide for whom this is not true, and someday they will be filling your prescriptions, building the bridges you drive over, electing your presidents... you get the idea. Though you may feel relatively insulated from this now, we all stand to lose so much. |
| Our public school has been in session since September. To each his own. |
Very well put. I would say that one of the hardest aspects of this year, has been seeing how in-person learning improved my child's overall health and mindset and thinking about others who might want the opportunity but don't have it. I'm happy that many families, public and private, have embraced DL. I was fine with DL under the circumstances, but can attest from personal experience that being able to be with teachers and classmates in-person has been absolutely amazing for my student. Of course, we did not leave public for private just this year. There are pros and cons of both, and my child definitely gave up some things when we selected private over public. On the other than, features like smaller classes are definitely a plus right now. |
But besides being angry and rude to private school parents, why not direct that anger to your government who is failing you? Private schools aren’t the problem. It’s your elected officials, school boards, etc. Private schools have figured out how to make it work. I’m sure public schools could as well if they put in the effort. Your classist digs to aren’t warranted either. We are solidly middle class and sacrifice quite a bit to send our kids to private. |
| I'm not laughing necessarily but I just don't get how they didn't see this coming. |
|
My kids are still in school full-time but that's besides the point. I'm used to getting laughed at here and getting side eye in real life for choosing to send my kids to Catholic school. This is nothing new. You don't have to laugh in secret, I honestly don't care.

I’ve directed plenty of anger at my government officials and I have enough leftover for people like the PP laughing at the poor saps “stuck in public.” |
I think the majority of private school parents did see this coming. I know I did. We chose private years ago. Regardless of whether the schools were open for 12 days or 12 weeks, the time to get to know their teachers and see classmates was worth it. We could have caught up with friends during sports and activities this fall, but it was very beneficial to have the kids back on campus. The school is fully commited to reopening when they can. I expect the school to reopen for on campus learning during this school year. I don't believe the public schools will have that option in this area. The schools in other states are doing well open on campus. We have the lowest infection rates in the country almost. The school system still can't figure out a plan to reopen. It doesn't leave much hope that things will change soon for the public schools. I'm not laughing at anyone because it simply isn't funny for so many students. |
1. Not all private schools have closed. Ours hasn't. 2. Everybody knows it could happen, probably thinks it is likely to happen. People chose to do different things with that information. Specifically, some people can't abide paying for DL, and others don't mind or even prefer it. |
| OP you are right. Many of us told all the apps running to get private spots that they are wasting a lot of money. I posted several times, that I would absolutely not be rushing to pay thousands per month and then have kids at home. If they are millionaires, oh well... who cares. But, we have people posting that they are broke but their HHI is 350K. Honestly, they are truly morons who don't deserve the luck that life brought them by such high HHI. |

| OP sounds like she has a very mature kid. |
| Interesting. I could not be MORE grateful for jumping to private two years from Arlington schools because my kids' school pivoted very quickly, and while remote learning is nowhere near perfect, my kids are learning and going into school a few times a week. I would be stressed if we HADN'T jumped to private! |
