The lost deposit is a legit issue to get resolved. Unfortunately, it sounds like you are going to have to do a little more work for that one. I was also caught up in that glitch and eventually it was straitened out.
We were also told this period of light practice will be price adjusted. I know it's hard to trust given the experience lately, but we did get quite a fair refund for the spring, so I think it will be okay. It also sounds as if this will be very short term (probably just this week). I am quite sure attendance IS taken into consideration for group placement. Swimming once per week will not get a kid invited to advanced juniors or other advanced groups, that is true. I am also quite sure those attending once per week are not aiming for advanced groups. However, it is RMSC policy that you get to keep your spot with once per week in that group. If you are that opposed to the policy, you are welcome to look for another club. If you could find the financials/budget for the club, you may be surprised what they are paying for. Since I can't find it quickly, I won't pretend I know, but I am willing to believe it covers much more than coaching. Across the groups I have heard about, in is not uncommon to get about half of their minimum practice time. We are dealing with extreme circumstances. They have kids and coaches in as early as 4:30 am every day and as late as 9 pm to get as much in as possible. The feeling in my house certainly is that something is better than nothing, and realizing that we could very likely see a complete pause at another point of this pandemic, we'll take what we can get. |
It's good to hear you got the money straightened out. We went back and forth for weeks and gave up. Swim said I had to contact county who said I had to contact swim, and repeat. The money is a rec department issue, not RMSC as the rec department handles registration and finances. RMSC doesn't pay for the pool time or life guards. That is subsidized by the county, which is how in the past (before the price changes) they were able to keep rates much lower. They raised the prices to pay the coaches more after losing some coaches to private teams paying more. We'd support the price increases if we got more coaches, which was one of the multiple justification of the increase, but that hasn't happened. City of Rockville subsidizes the program for the Rockville group, which is why their prices are even lower than KSAC, Germantown, Olney and MLK. Unfortunately most of the other swim teams are not taking new members. Some of the indoor pools that they rent aren't being rented out to outsiders right now. We are at less than 1/4 our practice time. 1/2 is understandable. It would be nice if the county opened up to other teams. |
| Soon none of this will matter. Montgomery County will order the facilities closed and none of our kids will be in the pool whatsoever |
They just announced it going back to the regular schedule. We aren't going to go back on lock down. If we were, they would have done it already. |
I wouldn’t be so sure of that. I’m with PP. it’s all going to close down again. The numbers are just getting too high. |
| If current trend-lines continue, "it's extremely likely we'll be discussing cancellation of those activities in the near term." |
| I don’t think a full stay at home order will come, but county facilities are likely to close again at some point. Regardless, if they phase back using the EO currently in place, it’s important to have it applied appropriately to Rec swim facilities. So, thanks to all that helped on that front. |
I'm okay with kids who swim once a week and are still on the team. RMSC expects that and uses that to calculate how many kids they can take. This fall I saw a handful of kids coming once a week to my child's group and I assume it was because they have other sports and the times were not as flexible as they were in the past. No one knew the times before they signed up. It's completely understandable. In times of covid, even better if kids only come sporadically anyway. For them and everyone else. I believe RMSC took every swimmer who wanted to sign up for this fall. I mean they didn't add any new kids with tryouts but I don't think anyone was pushed off the team for space reasons. My child's coach is doing a great job at KSAC. |
Agree. Thanks to those who helped to push for the revision! Things will likely change on a daily or weekly basis, so we should all try to stay flexible and patient. |
| Has the capacity rule actually changed yet? |
Glad your child's coach is doing a great job. Ours isn't particularly organized or pleasant to the kids. Many have complained and RMSC hasn't done anything to change things. It got better for a while but now back normal. Coaches could have been flexible with the times and polled parents on when was good for them/other activities but they didn't. But, even if they did, you still have lots of kids who are very sporadic to attendance. Given its team, not rec swim, they should be required to attend the majority of practices to maintain their spot. Lots of kids who want to be on the team who would attend don't get on because other families hold slots they aren't really using. |
Yes, its back to the original fall schedule. They got a waiver after saying they applied, were denied and not eligible for another. |
| Was the waiver just for RMSC? |
|
It’s not a waiver, it’s a clarification of how aquatic centers should be utilized under the most recent EO.
25% CAPACITY Somewhere in the execution/communication County Rec believed their aquatic centers were to be held to 25 people, this was not the intention and has now been clarified. |
To add, RMSC (and other PVS clubs) have waivers in place to allow multiple swimmers per lane. They submitted detailed safety plans for approval upon the return to indoor swimming. |
