I am quite sure attendance IS taken into consideration for group placement. Swimming once per week will not get a kid invited to advanced juniors or other advanced groups, that is true. I am also quite sure those attending once per week are not aiming for advanced groups. However, it is RMSC policy that you get to keep your spot with once per week in that group. If you are that opposed to the policy, you are welcome to look for another club.

If you could find the financials/budget for the club, you may be surprised what they are paying for. Since I can't find it quickly, I won't pretend I know, but I am willing to believe it covers much more than coaching.

Across the groups I have heard about, in is not uncommon to get about half of their minimum practice time. We are dealing with extreme circumstances. They have kids and coaches in as early as 4:30 am every day and as late as 9 pm to get as much in as possible. The feeling in my house certainly is that something is better than nothing, and realizing that we could very likely see a complete pause at another point of this pandemic, we'll take what we can get.
