OP. Thank you for this, and I hope things improve. |
OP. Boulder is tempting. A colleague of mine suggested Chapel Hill as a nice college town. This will sound stupid but I need to get these stupid high school rankings out of my head because intellectually I know they don't measure what really matters to a child's happiness and development, but it's all I have to go on and so few places measure up to what DMV has there. Sigh. |
OP. I should give these more consideration. Many thanks. |
OP. Anecdotal is what I'm after--thabk you very much for sharing your perspective and I am happy the move worked out! I am born and raised in the tiny suburbs of the San Francisco Peninsula so I've never known some of these options--like really big lots. Some walkability but cultural diversity and access to nature definitely takes a car ride. |
OP. Thank you. I have always loved the people I have met from the Midwest but I could imagine a cultural norm of nosiness could take some getting used to for my California blend of introvert/extrovert. Maybe that will make sense to other Californians here. I wish you luck in your decision. |
OP. I am getting the sense that we would stick out a bit. Thank you for the advice! |
OP. Sounds like you have found a groove, which is great. Thank you. Do you think you would stay if not for the family, or might you choose a different bubble? |
OP. Thank you--that is helpful. May I ask where you ended up? |
OP. I hope the tide turns for you (or you find a way out!). Thank you for sharing. Good luck and stay safe. |
OP. Great point. I think there is probably a gap between Google Maps commute times and lived experience on the ground. Even thirty minutes is probably a bigger barrier than I realize. That is about how far I am from San Francisco and I hardly go. I also sleep two hours at a time and am getting a doctorate in diaper changing, but still. |
OP. Thank you. It sounds like you lived the experience we're contemplating. I was really hoping the excellent-sounding Metro could bride the gap somehow ... |
OP. Good points. Palo Alto is the school district that scares me. I'm still trying to figure how how to identify a school district that is rigorous but not crushing. I understand that perhaps the suicide issue in PA was somewhat anomalous, but I love these girls so much I can't help but feel concerned. RPV is spectacularly beautiful. That area north of San Diego deserves more attention. Thank you very much. |
OP. Manhattan sounds amazing to me, less so to my wife. How did you find the adjustment in COL? Schools? Many thanks! |
The people I know in NC have their kids either doing private, charter it going to the NC boarding school for math and science. Their college placements have been excellent. If we could go to Chapel Hill we probably would, just for a chance at that boarding school. It is state funded. |
^^^sorry this is for high school, not earlier, in most cases. |
