Maryland has a population density of 594 people per square mile. And Maryland is way more diverse.

Population density makes a huge difference in the spread of Covid.

Like in Arizona, for example, which has a population density of 45 people per square mile.

MCPS waited until after a lot of other area school districts announced their plans to stay closed through January, AND assigned responsibility for the decision to the county health officer. Whatever you might want to call that, "courage" it ain't.

I would call it responsible. Not rushed, but reasoned. Everyone was hoping the US would be in a different position by now. No other country has tried to reopen schools with numbers like ours.

Nope. Connecticut is 5.5K mi² and has a population of 3.7 million. Population density of 672 people per square mile.

And they are doing as well as Maine somehow.




People need to stop making excuses as to why our state can't get this under control. We need leaders who will follow science and learn from other states and countries; we need citizens who will follow public health recommendations and laws, and we need self control.

PP, as you know, here in the US, we have about 14,000 individual school districts, each making their own individual decisions. Opening schools isn't a national decision, and it's not based on national numbers.

Yes, it is a local decision. But where local control hurts us in this particular situation is not having a national strategy/set of guidelines/examples of how schools can do this safely. In other countries with centralized control, they have made schools a national priority and set common guidelines for how to do this safely. We have a situation where every district in the US is trying to figure it out alone - with different budgets, different student and teacher populations etc. The districts that have stated they do not feel they can provide in person right now are saying that given their resources (and I mean that term broadly) they don’t know how to protect everyone.
