Has anyone heard anything about refunds from Calleva?

If they are going to cancel, they need to just do it, instead of a week at a time. If it's not safe to do week 1, then weeks 2, 3, and 4 aren't safe either.

Disagree, and that’s not the approach they are taking—their email said they would make week-by-week decisions. Week 1 is before the end of MCPS, and one of their lighter weeks - so it makes perfect sense to me that that would be more likely to be cancelled than the following weeks.

If they are making a financial decision. From a safety perspective, a lighter week would be safer.

What is going to be different about week 2?

Stringing it out just makes it harder to make alternative plans.

It seems reasonable to me to do it piecemeal.

They are waiting to see if numbers continue to improve and the government allows greater opening. Why rush into a decision before necessary? Hogan did the same thing with schools, and I think that was right.

If you absolutely need certainty now, you can cancel and forfeit the deposit. Otherwise, I don’t think it is fair to force them to cancel when there is still a chance they could open as the summer goes on.

Week 2 will be a week further out. In a pandemic when things can change rapidly, it is not all or nothing. You want them to make a decision for the whole summer now. If you want to withdraw your kid and have certainty; you have a few more weeks to do that, though you will lost your deposit. They have been very clear that they are taking this on a week-by-week basis. If safety is your top concern, then I’m not sure why you still have your kids enrolled.

I will happily drive my kids out there if they stay open but need to forgo the bus

And what is the deal for week 1 cancellation? Full refund?

From their email:
OPTION A:
For those who would like to stay invested in Calleva and help sustain our year-round team (the people who support summer camp all year long), there are 2 choices:

1. Receive a refund for camp and your $150 non-refundable registration fee becomes a credit in your Calleva account. If you want to keep your entire 2020 camp tuition as a credit in your Calleva account, please let us know. Whatever the amount, your credit can be used for 2021 camp registration OR for any of the following Calleva programs over the next 18 months: River School (kayaking, rafting), Calleva Horse Adventures, Farm & Forest Cubs, a group experience (for adults and kids!), or any Calleva farm event. Credits expire on September 1, 2021.

2. Receive a refund for camp & convert your $150 per week non-refundable registration fee to a tax-deductible donation to Calleva (a 501c3 organization). In this case, Calleva will provide you with a receipt for your tax purposes. Families who choose to donate at least their per-camper deposit amount will receive exclusive access to 2021 Summer Camp PRE-REGISTRATION, (BEFORE next year's regular Returning Family Registration).

OPTION B:
Receive a refund for camp tuition, and Calleva will split the non-refundable deposit with you. We will give you $75, included in the amount of your refund check & mailed to your address via USPS. This allows you to receive some cash back right away, while helping Calleva cover fees & other administrative expenses associated with your 2020 camp registration.

Wait - that looks like the same announcement they made about cancellations a few weeks ago. So, if they cancel, you still don't get the deposits back? We are waiting on week 2, for multiple kids, and it seems like we may just as well cancel now, right?

Anyone know if the maintain waitlists? I’d be interested in taking spots of people that cancel early.

The difference is if YOU cancel before June 1st, you forfeit the deposit. It doesn't become credit for next year or anything, and you can't get the pre-registration for the donation. It's just $150 gone.
If THEY cancel, the deposit becomes a credit for next year (so, assuming you send your kids next year, no money lost), OR you can take the donation option and get pre-registration OR you can take the $75 refund with no credit for next year.

I would wait it out. Week 2 is unlikely (although not impossible). Cancelling now is giving up $150 with no benefit. If you wait for them then the options above apply.

The website says that a decision about June weeks will happen no later than May 18 which is today so I think June will have to be cancelled.
Anonymous
If someone cancels now but then the week in question is canceled by Calleva, it is pretty crappy for that person to lose the deposit while others get a credit. At the end of the day, no one could have attended the camp because Calleva never ran it.

If camp ultimately runs, I have no problem with those people losing the deposit.

Ditto. Which will bite as I love the bus thing but be that as it may. I wrote them an email saying that I would be happy too. And take my high adventure kids to wherever they need to be for the week. And send them with their own tents! Time to buy sleeping hammocks for all maybe.

Not Calleva, but Valley Mill sent out an email noting that, given the timelines and requirements for Maryland Phases I and II, it is highly unlikely that there will be camp for the weeks of June 15 and June 22.

MoCo hasn't satisfied the requirement of 14 days of decreasing cases that is required to start Phase I, and then they need 14 more days of decreasing cases to start Phase II (which is what allows camps to open).

Calleva has also canceled weeks 2 and 3, but hasn't yet made a decision about the high adventures for those weeks.

Are they just sending these emails to people who registered for these weeks? I see nothing on their website and haven't gotten any emails (but we are not going until mid July)
