^ agree ?. I have a U14 and U11 and this is the first weekend since Xmas where there was no soccer games or scrimmages and no Friday night practice. It was glorious!! We went out to a fabulous dinner, came he and watched a movie. Both boys are at friends’ Houses today. Friends they never have time to see on weekends or weeknights- only at school- because of soccer.
My husband and I both worked out twice today after waking up at a leisurely time not 6am to get in the car and drive to some faraway location. I am loving this. Next weekend it’s another away soccer tournament weekend. My kids don’t like sitting in the car hours on end for a game. They love to play, not sit in traffic up and down the 95 corridor. Anyone who says they liovd doing that must be an incredibly boring person or full of sh@t. Possibly both. And Mr Full of sh@t’s kids are most likely on electronics/iPhones the entire car ride. Hypocrite. That’s what every kid on my sons’ team does. |
Why the vitriol? If it's what you and your family enjoy, I don't understand the need to attack others. |

It was in response to the “video games must be your choice of recreation” poster. Just pointing out that’s what these kids are doing the 8 hours they are on the road sitting in traffic. |
When they could be outside shooting hoops or playing pick up—which mine do on home game days. Anyone who brags about driving 2-3 (or 5-6!) hours for league games is an idiot. |

For three years we gave up literally every holiday weekend from Memorial Day through Columbus Day for travel tournaments. Not committing was not an option and we were told that. We missed Memorial Day and Fourth of July family events. Missed Labor Day weekend away as a family. (Wife and young one stayed home rather than the long travel.)
Looking back, we got caught up in this rat race and I regret that we didn’t call out the coaches or question them. As someone upthread suggested, we give these coaches and programs too much command of our lives to be “elite” |
My post had nothing to do with “video games must be your choice of recreation”. By the way, we had a fabulous home cooked dinner and watched a move tonight, in front of a nice fire. My son has friends, on his team and outside of his team. I'm glad you and your husband work out. It is rare that we have to wake up early to attend a tournament, but if we do we accommodate it by getting to bed early. 50% of our games are local (home games), most of the away games are within a reasonable distance, some games/tournaments turn into weekend trips; which we as a family don't mind. Yes, we allow our son to play on his phone during portions of drives to away locations. I am not full of shit. If this is not for you and your family, fine, but why the hate for families that enjoy the experience? I really don't get it! |
, No one is bragging about driving to league games or tournaments, my son just wants to compete at a higher level. BTW, he, also, enjoys basketball and plays in a winter league. Also, I am not an idiot. If it's not for you, that's fine, but why attack families that enjoy the highest level of youth soccer? |
Exactly. And I know people who drive 90 mins one way 2x/week for practice. |
Sorry, but no high level teams are training only twice a week. If you are traveling 1.5 hours, one way, to play on a rec team, I pity you. |
They travel 90 mins 2/week for specialized individual coaching. I don’t get it at all. And if the elite teams are training 4-5x/week and telling kids that they should do only that sport, they are doing the kids a disservice. |
I would love to know what they shell out for club team plus 2x/week individualized coaching. And for how many years? I will bet $100 they won't get that much in any college scholarship |
Who said it's about getting a college scholarship? Stop being a troll, would you? |
Boys ENCL is the big lie. They are using the stories of the Girls getting lots of college scholarships to entice families without explaining that girls are twice as likely as boys to get a scholarship. ECNL is the highest level of play for girls, and is certainly not for boys. Colleges are much more likely to find mens recruits overseas or in the DA system than in ECNL. These folks dragging their clubs into ECNL and making big promises are going to have to explain a lot in a few years. Then again, the pissed off parents will be U18's and leaving soon, so maybe they'll get away with it. |
| LOL. ECNL, they certainly win the marketing award for “highest level soccer.” Perfect fit for this forum. |
