Industrial? I'm pretty sure you were at the wrong campus. GMU is surrounded by downtown Fairfax, which is cute and getting some decent restaurants, bars, etc. in it (finally), parks, residential neighborhoods, and malls that cater to college kids. It's walkable and they've been doing a lot to try to upgrade its "curb appeal." So, try again.

You think Fairfax, VA is CUTE!?! Who hurt you?

Old town Fairfax, you idiot. Main Street. Where GMU students go to eat. You clearly have never been on campus

I’m quite familiar with Fairfax, thanks. I stand by what I said.

Yes, even Montgomery college is better. I guess it’s so popular because it’s close. I cannot imagine having the true college experience there.

How would OP like it if I posted a picture of his/her house stating it is the ugliest house ever. Why would someone ever post such an insulting comment??

+1. Probably a student or parent whose child didn't get in. It's that time of year. GMU has become much more difficult to get into. If OP is real, then they are confused by all the construction going on on campus because the center of the campus is quite green and lovely. Here's google images of it: https://www.theatlantic.com/magazine/archive/1946/04/nuremberg-a-fair-trial-a-dangerous-precedent/306492/

GMU still accepts 80% of the students who apply. Relax.

This is like people saying VT and St Mary's are hard to get into. They aren't...

Haha ^tiny

I said the same thing. I honestly never really toured the school before, but when we did were thoroughly not impressed. Brick and concrete and horrible walking paths and crossing areas. It was so congested with drivers. It was just very blah.

I would consider places like Summit, NJ or Glencoe, IL or Birmingham, Mi good examplars of charming, cute suburban areas.

You can't compare admissions rates of Virginia state schools to private or other public institutions. Public schools serve a different base than privates. All across VA, high school college counselors guide Virginians to the most sensible selections of in-state colleges and universities. The counselors have great Naviance figures based upon their own high school's history and write letters of recommendation to the VA schools. Where a parent can say "I want junior to apply to these 12 privates and the counselor says "sure, but some may be a reach" the counselor follows through. With publics, the counselor is going to whip out the Naviance stats and say "UVA isn't going to happen for you unless you have a 4.44 from our high school; see here" and the student won't get the high school's support. The consequence is that all acceptance rates for UVA institutions are high compared to privates because the students self-select and the high school counselors also act as gatekeepers. That's also because the publics don't practice yield protection. The true test is to look at the GPA and incoming test scores. The average GPA at Mason is now a 3.66. You may try to laugh at 80% but that 3800 students who did not get in who thought, based upon their high school's naviance and counselor's recommendation, that they had a shot at getting in. Also there has been a surge in the selectivity numbers because new dorms have been added so there is a brief respite in the dorm crunch at GMU.

So you want the buildings to match like an outfit?

PP - you’ll like JMU, then. The building are ALL gray.

FWIW, Stanford looks like a town built by Taco Bell.

Why is it then that restaurants can’t survive in that area? They come and go all the time. Goodness, even the Panera 1.5-2 miles from campus shut down. It was like a ghost town. We live in Fairfax City and see very few students at the local restaurants.
