Of the 20 counties with the highest level of middle class "white flight," 5 are in the DC area

Many of us who grew up in MoCo in its best years cannot bear to see what it’s become. Many of us who’ve upped sticks to the exurbs now feel the crowding of new arrivals and are plotting our next moves. Memories of the harmonious homogeneity of our youthful neighborhoods make majority white areas attractive. Having seen both sides, I’d simply prefer to live among my own. Latinos do this and are not criticized, same with blacks, E and S Asians. I feel no guilt and no need to apologize for seeking the demographic which suits me. The constant criticism of whites is tiresome, and living in a low-trust (multicultural) society is not for me. We’re in a very white area now, and love it, but don’t plan to stay and wait until it changes.

The last of my MoCo friends are planning their exit so I’ll have no need to drive those wretched roads to visit. They’re getting out of MD altogether, and I believe it’ll be our next move, as well. I want more distance from DC and Baltimore - even from Rockville and Frederick!- should TSHTF.

I have, and if you like littered streets, noise, a rise in petty crime such as stealing, breaking into cars, packs of 12 year olds hanging out at 11pm on a school night and declining property value, then you can live in a black neighborhood.

If you like safe, clean places, move to white neighborhoods. Ever see a successful AA live in an all black neighborhood? They flee these areas whenever they can.

Maybe you visit Mitchellville or Upper Marlboro sometime and venture more outside of Great Falls.

I live in a predominantly black neighborhood in Prince George’s county and it is nothing like PP’s racist tirade. You go on paying that “I want to live near whites” tax, pp. It’s good to have an affordable area that is pleasant to live in imho.

Exactly. I live in a predominantly AA neighborhood in DC—my neighbors are doctors, lawyers, professors, journalists, etc. Property values are rising and homes start around 800K. We love it here—people are friendly, crime rate is low, and it’s nothing at all like PP’s narrow view of black neighborhoods. Sad to read, but I guess I’m not surprised.

huh, interesting. White high income person here with lots of white friends in Moco and we're all happily staying. Grew up here too.. Sorry you don't like diversity and that you place trustworthiness onto white people only. Kinda sad but based on your attitude, I agree. You don't belong in MD. Probably not even in the DMV.

As a white guy, frankly, black people seem to make better neighbors. In my neighborhood they're friendly, will actually talk to you, will come hang out and are generally less pretentious than other white people. I've felt a stronger sense of community in neighborhoods where I've had more black neighbors than white.

Might be an age thing. Several of our neighbors are older white people. They hardly ever talk to us, a mixed race couple, but I don't think it's due to our mixed race. Apparently they aren't very friendly with even the other old white people in the area. The younger white neighbors do engage, as do the non white ones.

I have to agree with the PP (white guy). Asian here who lives in an UMC neighborhood in MoCo and we do have a good number of black families in our community. I find our black neighbors to be much more friendly and non-pretentious and the first to initiate/attend neighborhood social gatherings. The white families (although not all) seem to be more to themselves. Maybe they're more shy, but I feel more comfortable and more myself, to be honest, with the black families in our neighborhood.

Agreed. The only thing I'll say about my Asian neighbors is that it's hard getting to know them because they tend not to speak much. Koreans in particular often seem to ignore me when I attempt to say hi, maybe because they're uncomfortable with their English? I don't know, but once the ice broken my Asian neighbors have all been very friendly and unpretentious.

The Asian culture in general is not an open, friendly culture, a bit similar to what you encounter in East Coasters, but once they get to know you, they can be quite friendly. I'm an Asian American transplant from the West Coast. I find many East Coast people not as open or friendly in the beginning. Very reserved. Of course there are outliers.

I don't know.. the ones in my $750K+ house neighborhood all have their trashes put away and have nice curb appeal.

There are a couple of homes here that have been left derelict that are owned by white people, though, enough such that neighbors complained to the city, and the city gave them notice to fix the outside of their house.

Prince George’s County, Md.
Montgomery County, Md.
Fairfax County, Va.
Prince William County, Va.
Loudoun County, Va.

plus 15 others

I plan to add to that....

If the white people that are fleeing are whiny Republicans, then good riddance.

I assure you, they are not given 97% of DC voters chose Hillary. Guess they can't stand the results of the voting (the definition of stupidity)

We just did and couldn't be happier. Racist, no, white, yes. Couldn't take the high taxes and the petty crime in our neighborhood had slowly increased to not so petty, including no longer being able to walk home from the metro we so cherished living by since strong armed robberies and assaults had started to become the norm. Strange, the powers that be in these areas don't always report the crime going on, so people don't think it exists. But those of us who live there, do know it is very real. Why would I stay in an area that has steadily declined for the past decade, let the new people pay for it.

Oh please, my old neighborhood in Bethesda changed over 30 houses in the last year, and they are all white, the new neighbors that is .... I just left, but this is complete bs coming from you. In those liberal elite neighborhoods, such as my old one, it is still all white young families with multiple children (three to four in most cases). You still need 1.1 and above to purchase in that neighborhood and the generational wealth is definitely helping out. Rockville is its' own social experiment and has been for the past twenty years. The schools are not number one any longer and very well may never be again. I mean that curriculum/common core thing, what a disaster for those families! Those leaving DC are (most of whom moved into my old neighborhood) left because their liberal version that if they moved into a neighborhood, got Whole Foods there and jogged twice a day through the streets, that the neighborhood would magically transform. And it doesn't as they found out just in time for their first child to start elementary school. They left DC because that social experiment has failed as well. Case in point, the poor cashier shot last week at the Whole Foods. And to think the mayor was reelected unchallenged with the problems the city has .... I never thought I'd say this, but please bring Marion back, please!
