If the white people that are fleeing are whiny Republicans, then good riddance.

The people most anxious to live in a lily-white neighborhood and send their kids to lily-white schools are... wealthy liberal Democrats.

YES. Look at Arlington.

It didn’t make the naughty list.

Nothing to "flee" from in arlington. it's already super white

Study: https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S0049089X17305422

Abstract:

Scholars have continued to debate the extent to which white flight remains racially motivated or, in contrast, the result of socioeconomic concerns that proxy locations of minority residence. Using 1990–2010 census data, this study contributes to this debate by re-examining white flight in a sample of both poor and middle-class suburban neighborhoods. Findings fail to provide evidence in support of the racial proxy hypothesis. To the contrary, for neighborhoods with a larger non-white presence, white flight is instead more likely in middle-class as opposed to poorer neighborhoods. These results not only confirm the continued salience of race for white flight, but also suggest that racial white flight may be motivated to an even greater extent in middle-class, suburban neighborhoods. Theoretically, these findings point to the decoupling of economic and racial residential integration, as white flight may persist for groups even despite higher levels of socioeconomic attainment.

I agree. This is a nuance that is left out of the original post. We're talking Aspen Hill, not Bethesda.

Interesting. I wonder which neighborhoods they were talking about in Loudoun and Fairfax then.

this includes moving away from Asians... are there places that are predominately Asian/East Indian?

Maybe that is it. . . I don't know. . .

You haven’t spent much time in south Arlington, I see.

Yes. Some Centreville neighborhoods in Fairfax Co. Annandale. ...

Minorities don't have a right to have a certain number of white people living near them.

Among other things it contributes to the wealth disparity between whites and minorities.

How long, if ever, until this happens in parts of Bethesda?

I think Bethesda is more at risk of people no longer paying a premium to be segregated from the "poors"

For example, my house near Wheaton would literally cost twice as much in Chevy Chase

If the next generation does not feel that it's worth paying double for that difference, I'll benefit and Bethesda/Chevy Chase owners will lose out

Who knows how it will turn out but I've obviously placed money on my bet

Of course, the entire article is about people moving away from undesirable neighbors so maybe I bet poorly

.. the 20 counties with the highest levels of middle-class white flight were:

Prince George’s County, Md.
Montgomery County, Md.
Fairfax County, Va.
Prince William County, Va.
Loudoun County, Va.

plus 15 others

Hmmm, I still see tons of white people in both Fairfax and Loudoun. YMMV, though.

Hmmmm, it snowed last week, therefore global warming isn’t real.

Idiot.

Most of the people leaving our neighborhood are white, but they are also old. As they move out, more nonwhite families seem to move in. We are in Rockville MD.

I don't know about here, but on the list there is Middlesex County, N.J. - lots of Asian/Indians. My sibling lives near there.

Anonymous wrote:I live in PG. who are these white people who are fleeing? I see more white people in many parts of the county and other parts seem to have few if any to begin with. Oh well. We don’t miss you, fellow white people!

I'm curious too and also live in a part of PG County that is mostly white. From my own observations (and this could be completely off) but the ones I see leaving or complaining the most about things "changing" are the older folks that have been long time residents.

The whites moving in are younger and typically more educated fleeing DC and more expensive areas for cheaper housing that still relatively close to the city and transit. If we were having white flight in the traditional sense of the definition where middle to wealthy whites leave and poorer minorities move in leaving an area economically depressed, then we wouldn't have all the new development we have now, like a Whole Foods, new coffee shops, restaurants, etc.

Good. A housecleaning that boots out the racists.

Lots of places that are heavily Asian. Our middle school in western Fairfax is 2/3 Asian. My white child is the minority.

I’ve also heard the same about certain parts of Ashburn.
