Discussion this morning women who wear bikinis that are over 40.

I don't have a bikini bod so this is a non issue for me (I also look horrible in a one piece Bc I am pale with lots of cellulite) but as far as age, I didn't even realize that there was a guideline. My mil wears a bikini in her 70's and looks amazing, and she should keep on wearing it!

Very puzzled by this as well. Don't get at all.

Both are comfortable if they fit. Women don't just have swimsuit shopping phobia because they hate themselves, many are only aggravated because it's hard to find suits that fit or flatter. There's a lot of variation in torso length even with the same height and dress size, cut the suit in half and more women can wear it. Then there's the mix and match of tops and bottoms, more possibilities.

Exactly. I am tall and have a long torso and it is so much easier to get a comfortable 2 piece suit.

I can't stand wearing one piece in the hot weather. Most of them are lined up, so it takes forever to dry. And sitting in a wet suit is so uncomfortable. Bikinis dries very quick, especially if there are no padding in the bra.

Same! I would look god awful in a bikini but when others rock it I just think "damn good for you. I need to workout and eat better, but I just love pizza and croissants."

I actually swim and don't want to be bothered by slipping bra straps or the feeling that the bottoms could find their way loose. If you don't do much more than some mild paddling around, I suppose neither of those would be a concern if you were wearing a two piece.

What does this mean? You swim laps? Your bathing suit bottom should never fall off. That would be odd. I "swim" with my three kids in a bikini - they've never seen me in a one piece unless I'm swimming laps.

Swim laps and body surf. For the latter especially the risk of losing a bikini bottom is not small.

I surf and swim and I always wear sport bikinis. I don't wear the tiny string things because those do fall off or slip down if you're doing serious swimming or surfing, but the sport bikinis are the best for real swimming/surfing, in my opinion. One advantage is when you get rolled and collect a ton of sand, you can discreetly slip down the bottoms and pull up the top to empty the suit out. The problem with the one-piece suits and surfing is you collect sand on your belly under the suit -- horrible. It leaves your belly all scratched up and it's very uncomfortable on a board.

Also, I'm over 40, athletic but with noticeable cellulite and belly, and am certainly not rocking a bathing suit of any type, but I always wear my bikini. My wish to surf and swim as I wish trumps your psychological issues.

I'm the PP above who surfs/swims. One-pieces are far more uncomfortable for me. I have a long torso and most one-pieces leave me with shoulder marks after awhile because they pull down. You get sweaty under-boob (ugh). Because one-pieces never quite fit length-wise, I have to worry about wardrobe malfunction on the butt (the bottom rolls inward so I end up with a nasty wedgie). There's the sand issue for surfing above (and by the way, I almost never see a woman surfing in a one-piece when I surf, for the reasons I mentioned. It's just plain uncomfortable.). Day-long swim/surf sessions are intolerable because of the sand issues -- once you get sand in a one-piece, it's not coming out until you change. When I get out, I hate the feeling of dampness on my belly that comes with a one-piece. Going to the bathroom is annoying in a one-piece. I could go on and on and on.

I didn't wear bikinis until I was in my 30s (too shy) but I will never go back now. Wish I hadn't struggled with one-pieces all those years! What a pain they are in comparison.

before i discovered DCUM i had no idea only perfect and young women were allowed to wear bikinis. i spent every summer of my childhood in croatia and everyone young and old skinny and fat wore bikinis. what else is there?

here is the thing: if you don't look good ina bikini you don't look good in a one piece tankini etc either. you need to be fully dressed with like spanx to actually gain something visually compared to a bikini.

My best body part is my stomach. Why would I not show that, especially when bikinis are also more comfortable. You are still going to be subject to my flat, flabby ass (damn you worthless lunges/squats) in a tankini/one piece. Wouldn't you also like to be graced with my flat abs?

I just lost 30 lbs - you better bet I am wearing a bikini.

Yes! I have lost 20 since the fall and have 10 more to go by summertime. I will be wearing a bikini for the first time in two decades and I can't wait. Feels SO much better - comfort-wise and sexier - than a one piece or tankini (to me).

My wife is 5'4" saggy boobs, belly, stretch marks, and cellulite. She doesn't have a magazine cover bikini body, but she has the body that I want sitting next to me on the beach. She was self conscious about wearing a bikini the summer after our son was bored. I convinced her that she has nothing to worry about. Now she has well fitting bikinis that she wears on family vacations and then she has "slightly" smaller ones for when it is just the two of us.

I will wear a bikini until the day I die. Seriously, why are people so judgemental. I was recently with a man ten years younger than me -- 6 ft with a six pack - and he said my body was phenonemnal. I am in my 40s. It was amazing to hear, but I do not need a man to tell I am sexy for self validation. I will wear a bikini until I am 80, and I will use my sex appeal as a granny to pick up a man in his wheelchair.

Lucky you! I wear a bikini and have a decent body for a 40 something mom of three, but I have never had any man tell me my body was phenomenal (or any other synonymous word). That would be a confidence booster, for sure!

I love the feel of this thread. We will wear whatever we want and not even consider what haters think. Lord "Judgey Ones", get a life!
