envy, jealousy, secretly wishing they had the bodies to be able to pull it off (or rather, to be attractive enough that a guy was willing to tear if off)

Not always. I'm 5'5 and 117 pounds. 50 years old. Five children. I'm a marathon runner and martial arts instructor. I could rock a bikini. I don't wear one because I think after a certain age, they look ridiculous no matter how great your body is. I'm certainly not jealous. I just dress in an age-appropriate way.

That said, I don't really pay much attention to what other people are wearing at the beach, so unless someone directly asked me (like in this discussion), I wouldn't notice.

+1

Can't = judgment. If only negative people would work on themselves, instead of worrying about who is and is not wearing a bikini (such a great metaphor)!

So snarky. 50 and not fully evolved.

Ha-ha, same here. My mom is in her 60s and still wearing bikinies. And I love those grouops of older ladies (in their 80s or 90s) on Barcelona beaches who are topless and enjoying the life.

Very puzzled by this as well. Don't get at all.

Well, they are easier to go to the bathroom in. For me, they are more comfortable because I buy more athletic type suits like Athleta sells. They are more comfortable than the one piece speedos I wear when I am swimming laps.

Much more practical for layering with clothes and going to the bathroom. I didn't start wearing bikinis until I was 27 and waited too long.

Not so confining. Cooler. I get much less sweaty. Try it, you'll like it.

+1 I'm from a west-coast beach town. There, everyone of every age, size, shape and color is wearing a bikini. It's not seen as lingerie! It's freedom!

Now that I'm in LA, I had a friend tell me that maybe I might want to look into a one-piece. I actually took her advice. How confining! Forget it!

If you have largish boobs, most one pieces smash them down, which is uncomfortable and creates underboob sweat.

Oh god I had forgotten about under boob sweat. I was 37 weeks pregnant with an 11 pounder during the hottest may on record - first experience with under boob/ above belly sweat. Awful.

I remember being self conscious in a bikini post birth even though I snapped back in my late 20s. I would wear a cover up. Then I moved to a Caribbean country where everyone wears bikinis and I stood out. I might as well have worn a burkini! After a few years there, I am back to only wearing bikinis and I think nothing of seeing women of all ages and sizes in them. Totally changed my views and perception on the topic. I'm in my early 30s now and will rock them for the rest of my beach days.

You probably look older than your age when you wear a one-piece. Why cover up your great body? How is it "ridiculous"?

This insistence on no bikinis after 40 seems to be a D.C. thing. In other parts of the country, almost nobody wears a one-piece.

So...four whole pages and barely any mention of the fact that we women have had to endure...and accept...years and years of dealing with the saggy, beer-bellied, man-bra eligible, no butt men who are allowed to parade shirtless and free on the beach all day, when we are expected to cover up if we have even one dimple of cellulite? Shameful attitudes!

Both are comfortable if they fit. Women don't just have swimsuit shopping phobia because they hate themselves, many are only aggravated because it's hard to find suits that fit or flatter. There's a lot of variation in torso length even with the same height and dress size, cut the suit in half and more women can wear it. Then there's the mix and match of tops and bottoms, more possibilities.
