Is Duke worth the cost over resident tuition at UVA?

eh - depends on the program at duke. lots of mediocre A&S grads from duke puttering out dc (especially if they are moderately attractive white girls) working in 2nd or 3rd tier consulting shops, pr, etc.

But again, the difference between the schools is the price tag. No appreciable difference in the educational experience.

Total garbage. The quality of students at Duke exceeds those at UVA. The overwhelming majority of UVA students would be rejected from Duke. When it comes to education, the quality of the students around you matters. On that, Duke wins out hands down.

Uh, okay.

Numbers don't lie. Common data set.

Only if you fit in and are mature enough to take advantage of this. I was a middle class student; my parents paid for it without going into debt, but I didn't have the money to rush a sorority or go anywhere on any spring vacation. I did not fit in at all. I wish I had gone to UVA instead.

This.

This...is something people only say on the internet. Never heard anyone in real life have the balls to say something so short-sighted and stupid.

I went to Duke. I advised my oldest child to go to William and Mary instead (yes, she got into both). So you'd be wrong.

+1 My Duke resume opened so many doors for me that I'm not sure would have been available if I'd gone to a state school, no matter how highly ranked it was. It is just not the same.

I don't think Duke really opens any doors that UVA would not also open. (I turned down both for both undergraduate and law school, but have close relatives who went to Duke and many friends who went to UVA). The difference is just not that significant.

This is a tough question. I would probably choose Duke for its perceived prestige. In reality, I'm not sure there is a big difference. There are a lot of Duke grads in this area. I know several and while they are reasonably smart, they are not particularly impressive. They still seem obsessed with Duke though and talk about it constantly while most people (over forty) have moved on from their college years.

Just because you were hard up for cash doesn't mean everyone is. If money was no object you obviously would have sent your oldest to Duke.

This is common for students who attended expensive schools. The students have spent (or their parents have) a lot of money on the school and the school tells them over and over again how special they are to attend the school. You eventually start believing it and you think the school is amazing and so worth it. I remember my private elementary school doing this. I was maybe 6 and they would tell us how special we were to attend and how fortunate our parents spent the money and valued education. It's a form of brainwashing.

The cost is not relevant. The common data set tells the story.

I went to Duke and I think it's better than UVA - definitely harder to get in but I would send my kids to UVA in a heartbeat to save the money

All the Tailgate State alums I know won't shut up about their alma mater, the sports teams, wear the clothes constantly, etc.

I think that both fall under the category of prestigious southern universities. I would not go to Duke over UVA. I would definitely consider an Ivy or Stanford over UVA, however.

You do realize that UVA IS an Ivy already, right?

Save money and go to UVA.

If you think Duke has more prestige, use the saved money to go to grad school there.
