Is Duke worth the cost over resident tuition at UVA?

I had the choice between Duke v. UVA Echols. Went with Duke. All these many years later, I still am not sure it was the right or wrong decision. I got a good education at Duke but I imagine I would have ended up in pretty much the same place if I had gone to UVA. I must have missed all those great connections people are claiming to get from going to Duke. For those of you who went to Duke, you know there is a large social divide between private school kids vs. MC or UMC public school kids. The social environment is not for everyone.

If my kids were to have the same choice and $$ is not a factor, I would say there is no wrong decision - chose what is the better fit for the child. If it comes down to money and going into massive debt, Duke is probably not worth the extra $$.

I'd think this depends a great deal on the student (and, obviously, the family's financial situation). UVA is great school; I would rather my kid go there than Duke in the abstract. But if I could afford it, I wouldn't stand in the way of Duke as long as student had an explanation for why it was the right school for her. Preferably some explanation other than a desire to become an insufferable douchenozzle.

You don't know much history about the south or demographics, do you?

NP. I know how to read maps.

South was all democrats. Republicans (Lincoln) freed the dems' slaves.

Certainly doesn't know much abour Durham.

Neither do you, obviously. It's a shockingly, poor, liberal, mostly black democratic area encircling Duke. Read up on the Duke Lacrosse case.

Because a state is clearly all Republican or Democrat, just like the country - right?

Some places are more red. Some are more blue.

Are you really debating that there isn't more of a Republican presence in the South?

Hahaha. I know many people who went to top schools. The Ivy and public Ivy alums I know are generally normal or act that way. (I went to UCLA.) It's always the Duke grad that is a douchenozzle, as you put it. Always insecure about something. Not sure what, since it's a great school. I would lean to UVA just based on that. I want to like my kid after college.

Sorry to hijack the thread, but it bothers me so much when people revert to this claim. Please read more about US political party history before you through this around.

While I won't disagree with you I have to say that UVA comes in as a close 2nd in that category. At least the frat guys.
