Is Duke worth the cost over resident tuition at UVA?

Cornell? Dartmouth? Brown? Duke is on par.

You might be paying it, but it's still not worth it.
LOL, somebody might feel the same about you!

but she can meet a smart/rich man at either Duke or UVa, so that consideration doesn't cut strongly either way.

I don't think it's harder to get into anymore. The stats for the class of 2020 at UVA is amazing (frightening if you are the parent of a kid applying): 93% were in the top 10% of their class; 265 had perfect SATS; lots of international students competing for the same slots. UVA was recently named no. 1 public over UCLA and Berkeley (yeah I know . . ) but still if you live in VA ................

So many kids from TJ (like about half the graduating class). Their parents probably figured the in-state price was a good deal compared to Duke's price.

UVA will have an overall acceptance rate around 30%. Duke will be below 10%. You were saying?

UVA has a lot of dumb frat boys and the bottom half of the class isn't anything special. Duke is strong top to bottom.

You are crazy to choose Duke or UVA resident UNLESS $40K per year after-tax means NOTHING to you.

Blowing the money is worth the envy that Duke sticker on the BMW stokes in families at the country club, colleagues at the office, etc.

And it's crazy to buy a BMW when a Kia is just fine.

Not true. 93% of UVA's class of 2020 came from the top 10% of their high school class. Those days are long over.https://www.news.virginia.edu/content/2020-vision-look-inside-uvas-newest-class-0

True.

Duke really isn't very southern in most ways, even the fraternities. It has more in common with Yale, Princeton or Wesleyan than it does with Ole Miss, Clemson or Wake Forest.

duke is more southern than u.miami. duke and yale/wes are very dissimilar. it is closer to penn/princeton in feeling but it is closer to wake and vandy more than anything up north
